At this point I might as well have a tagline on my Bulwark comments: "I know this may make me seem naive, but ____ just made me sad." Usually the thing that gets dropped in the ____ is entirely predictable and should not be a surprise to anyone wit their eyes open, which mine are. Still, the utter horribleness of it somehow seems to hit me in waves.
Today, it's the paraphrase (I assume it's not an actual quote?) of Trump on criminals: "fight back until you knock the hell out of them, ‘cause it’s the only language they understand." If it's a paraphrase it's an accurate one. Criminal, to him, is a noun rather than a verb. It's not something people do, possibly transient and certainly contextualized by the specific details; it's how some people are. The corollary is his people, even whn they break the law, aren't the ones police should go after.
That's fascism. It's also, as I said, accurate, and just so damned wrong. And I know this may make me seem naive, but it just makes me sad.
