The whole debt ceiling debate and the Medicare/Social Security are going bankrupt talk from Republicans is driving me insane. Remember when we had budget surpluses? 1998-2001. Then Republicans decided that funding the government adequately was killing their mojo and their message that government sucks so they gave away the funds balancing the budget and removed the spending caps that were keeping everything under control. Obviously Democrats didn’t help, but it was Republicans who gave away the money.

The solution to Medicare and Social Security shortfalls is so simple. Remove the cap on payroll taxes. That this cap exists is just one more advantage the wealthy have.

Most of the solutions are actually simple--they just aren't actually possible.

Medicare and SS have been going bankrupt my entire life.. at least that is what politicians keep telling me.

Maybe we need a better revenue scheme? Or just some actual revenue in keeping with expenditure.

And it's the Republicans who are taking raising revenue off the table.

The idea that we can’t have tax brackets at 500k, 5mil, 15 million that are higher is bonkers. And normal people pay 7.65 in FICA on 100% of their salaries. Let richer people pay 7.65 on their entire salary!

It’s grossly regressive, to cut off contributions at an income point that now seems quite low. At the very least that cut off point should have been tied to inflation. Better yet, tie it to budget realities.
