I think it's simply acknowledging that the fight is dead. Even if McConnell spends the political capital to ram it through the senate, it's going nowwhere in the house. Taking up the fight gains him nothing and results in humiliating denial.
The Republican majority in the house is super thin and fractious. I can't see how McConnell could possibly know that. However, I will admit that he's afraid of how the House will react, ie, batshit crazy.
I like the term BATSHIT CRAZY this might work on d. j. "trump"the HUMP! as well, more to think about huh ? , I still favor a 45 cal. SLUG to the head, and I know this will work! YEA BUDDY !!! or a good beating at the Ballot Box might work as well---maybe ? we must RID ourselves of the ORANGE CREATURE TO BE SURE. Fornicate d. j. "trump" the HUMP! and I know some gay people that would LOVE to get their hands on him and that should send him running,
The House basically can't pass anything without Democratic buy-in. But they can, so long as Johnson (or whoever comes after Johnson if he's gone by the time I hit 'post') is speaker, they can keep anything from passing. That's the math for McConnell.
THAT'S NOT ALL d. j. "trump"the HUMP ! has put in ruins-----look at the Republican G.O.P. party now! his business SUCKS AS WELL, he should change his name to "I can ruin everything---just ask me!---or ASSHOLE OF THE WORLD!!!!!!! sounds good to me-----, NO SHIT! AS THE ANUS WILL SAY
I'm pretty sure he knows. The real question is if he has the intellectual honesty to admit that the propaganda machine and hysteria that he was part of stoking was what begat Trump.
That's the problem with most of these company men, so far as I've seen- the Hogans and the Sununus and so on. They can admit Trump is bad, many of them privately confess to loathing him. But they keep up the game of "Sure we have problems on our side, but the other side is pure, unadulterated evil that must be opposed at all costs."
That sort of framing inevitably gives us the current circumstance.
"Sure, Trump tried to overthrow the United States government and got people killed, but abortion." That sort of calculation? You really have to be up your own ass to use the word "but" in situations like the one McConnell finds himself in.

He's coffin-cornered on it.

That may be, but at the same time, he has to know that Trump has brought his party to ruin.
