I am writing to you as a deeply concerned constituent and proud American who values our Constitution, our democratic institutions, and our hard-won freedoms.
I am outraged by the recent bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on May 18, 2025, which, among other provisions, limits federal courts’ ability to hold government officials—including former President Donald Trump—in contempt for defying court orders, and blocks courts from issuing national injunctions to prevent potentially unlawful actions by the executive branch.
These provisions are not just radical—they are dangerous. They fundamentally upend the balance of power that has kept tyranny in check since our founding. Courts must retain their power to enforce the law and defend citizens from abuse. Removing this check is an invitation to authoritarianism.
Even more chilling are the echoes of history that this bill conjures. In the 1930s, Adolf Hitler used similar tactics to dismantle Germany’s democracy. By neutering the courts and arresting critics, he created a regime that silenced dissent and targeted anyone who dared speak out. If we allow our courts to be stripped of their authority and critics of the administration to be vulnerable to retaliation, we are walking a similarly dangerous path.
Freedom of speech and judicial independence are the cornerstones of a free society. No president—past, present, or future—should be above the law or able to rule unchecked. These provisions must not stand.
I urge you to take a stand, speak out, and work to repeal these authoritarian measures and protect the democratic institutions that safeguard our liberty. History is watching—and so are your constituents.
