Some good news on the Gaza front that Biden should be bragging about:

The US Navy just completed its pier project for offloading humanitarian aid into Gaza via the sea. This was an insane engineering project that was done at warp speed and will enable the deliveries of humanitarian aid to Palestinians at a checkpoint that the U?S controls and not the IDF. Joe Biden should be out there today congratulating the US Navy on completing this project so rapidly and professionally, and he should also be taking personal credit for it because there's no way in hell that Trump and the GOP would have went forward with this kind of project to help deliver food to starving Palestinians at a cost to the US tax payer. Not that the campus left will give Biden credit for it, but he should be shoving this project down the left's throats right now and highlighting that under a Trump presidency nothing like this would ever happen, and that Trump would be sending Bibi blank checks and unlimited weapons deliveries while never giving the Palestinians anything.

I saw disturbing footage from NBC of right-wing extremist Israelis actually blocking and dismantling aid convoys that were going into Gaza. Perhaps this was a one-time thing (God I hope so), but NBC portrayed it as an ongoing problem about which the IDF or other Israeli government security agencies were doing nothing to stop. It makes me wonder what those groups of Israelis think of the U.S. action and what they might try to do in response (hopefully nothing, but these days it seems a lot is on the legitimacy table for some groups...).

Remember the conservative folks dragging Sikh cabbies out of their cars and beating them in NYC after 9/11? This is the Israeli version of that sort of thing. Just imagine what the rest of the world thought of us during that time. And then we cried about the French protesting our invasion of Iraq and started calling our fries "freedom fries." I wonder if they have "zionism burgers" in Tel Aviv now.

"Zionism burgers" just doesn't have the alliterative zing of "Freedom Fries."

Yeah, similar mentality it seems, although there's also apparently extremist factions that do actually want to ethnically cleanse non-Jews from Gaza (again, I hope a very tiny faction). I guess Bibi thinks he can't go against them in order to stay in power? Which seems incredibly, rather evilly craven.

There were extremist factions here who just wanted to kill Muslims too (and would have liked to at least kick them all out of the US). I ran into a few of those guys when I went into the Marines in '04 myself. One of our squad leaders at the time was a sergeant who had previously deployed to Afghanistan and was of either Pakistani or Indian decent (I forget honestly) and had the words "DIE HAJI" carved into the side of his car as it sat in the battalion lot one night. I never told anyone I was Jewish while serving because of shit like that.

My point is that we've got plenty of that sort of thing over here both before and now. The GOP political class after Bush/McCain didn't want to rein in any of their racist base. In fact, they wanted to capitalize off of them. That's part of how Trump got his rise in the first place. A refusal to stamp it out by the GOP's political class and the decision to embrace it via dog whistles instead. Then we got Birtherism and Trump.

Travis, did I just read that you're a Jew? Did I miss this before?

At any rate, given your language and thinking ability, I have to say, as a shiksa raised by a very smart lawyer father, no surprise.😊

Mother is Jewish, father was protestant and converted to Judaism later on after the divorce. I’m an atheist technically speaking but that wouldn’t stop the nazis from throwing me into the oven.

I agree. With the Republican's apparently unqualified support for Bibi and his coalition (apart, weirdly, from Trump himself due to being butthurt about Bibi's recognition of Biden's win), they are kind of extending it internationally now.

Authoritarians around the world are uniting and helping one another. Why should Israeli and American authoritarians be any different?

The IDF will continue to be responsible for security inspections in Cyprus and Gaza, and for protecting the deliveries; and no US troops will be going ashore. https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/aid-trucks-begin-moving-ashore-via-gaza-pier-us-says-2024-05-17/

I don't see much political use in bombarding the Left with the news. It's the sort of thing that would appeal most to people who still think America is neither intrinsically evil nor beset with toxic alien carnage. (A diminishing constituency, to be sure.)

Agreed. The far left has jumped into the same abyss as the MAGA mob. They’re two sides of the same coin; completely delusional!…:)

Smart phones paired with social media and algorithmically-fed information siloes have radicalized both sides of the political aisle via fractured/amplified coverage of our respective rage triggers. Once you understand that everything else downstream of 2012 makes sense. It was like this with TV/print media and editorial selectivity before 2012, but then it got moved into our pockets via smart phone applications from 2012 onward.

The existence of that pier, and the act of doing it is great. I just hope to God that it's well protected.

The pier built by the US Navy, at the direction of President Biden, is a magnificent achievement. This is American greatness.
