I hope you don't mind a moment of humor. I read "although I am a lapsed Catholic" and almost had a heart attack. Then I looked up to
see it was Tim writing and not JVL (-:).
As one lapsed Catholic to another, I, too, loved Pope Francis. I also loved Pope John the 23rd. It does give one hope that if the Catholic Church now takes a right turn, as it did after John the 23rd, there will be a course correction. Love, Tom
Another Francis would be almost too much to hope for. But I’d honestly settle for someone like Paul VI, who managed to operationalize much of the work of Vatican II after his charismatic predecessor had died. The real reaction didn’t set in until we got (St.) JP II.
I can certainly understand your reaction thinking it was JVL! Just read this in a AP article: Francis “appointed the vast majority of electors, often tapping men who share his pastoral priorities, which suggests continuity rather than rupture.” Fingers crossed. (Lapsed, now ex-Catholic here, BTW.)
As a ‘fallen away ‘Presbyterian’ and you ‘lapsed Catholics’, our love for (at least mine) Pope Francis has to do with Faith…. He was ‘for true’…. And he will be so missed…..

I’m lapsed Christian and feel the same about Pope Francis: a decent and honorable man
