I think there's a difference between saying "we don't want further investigation into Epstein because it will prove embarrassing to Clinton or whoever" and keeping their heads down about it, saying nothing, because they've had to deal with Clinton's sexual peccadilloes over the years and are tired of it. The latter might be true even as the former definitely is.
