Oh this is very true. I have friends who became auto engineers. Highly efficient patents for better petroleum cars have been produced many times, and the oil companies absolutely buy them up to prevent them from ever seeing the light of day.
Though it goes beyond greed. This ends up in the 'what if we could actually cure world hunger' debate. Like sure, if you could produce all that, you would also consolidate power in the hands of very few people, put lots of people all over the world out of work, and we have no idea what that might do.
This is the issue when oil, like diamonds, is a commodity, and much like how the diamond mine companies heavily stifle supply to avoid prices dropping too much, the oil companies absolutely do not want a sudden glut of oil flooding the market, or a sudden massive drop in demand.
Of course, it's going to happen anyway, because you can only stop things for so long.
