Trump is NOT joking/kidding. He has no intention of leaving the White House. He will investigate some means or "loophole" that he will say gives him the right to a third term. He will go so far as to say he doesn't even have to run for office, but that he is entitled to a third term because he was cheated out office in the 2020 election.
As I have gotten older I have been less and less inclined to assume that I can read someone's mind. So when I offer a take on Trump I do so with a measure of tentativeness. The flip side is that I am skeptical of pundits who speak in definitive terms.
One thing I have noticed about the anti-Trump movement is that it can sometimes fixate on worst-case scenarios. And when those are presented as definitive takes, that can have the ironic effect of prematurely acquiescing to authoritarianism.
Does it ultimately matter whether Trump intends to get a third term if, for example, his health declines to the point where even MAGA fanatics no longer see that as a good idea?
By the same token, Trump is not immune to basic laws of political gravity. In 2028 he will be an 82-year-old incumbent who moved quickly and broke a lot of things. Along the way he may very well have pissed off a variety of people who voted for him in 2024.
So instead of letting Trump live rent free in our heads, I think that we should focus on driving up his negatives. We already have more than enough material to work with.

I would suggest that people aren't fixated on the "anti-Trump movement". Every scenario I mentioned in my posting is something Trump has toyed with at some point in the past.
Not taking Trump seriously regarding any comment he utters is asking for trouble.

That is correct. His second term is all, and only, about paving the way for that actuality, to normalize, intimidate and crush any American spirit we may have left. Then he'll install his gold throne underneath pictures of Putin, Stalin, Hitler, Orban, and Maduro and no one will know the difference.

I've been saying since 2018 that if he ever got back in the WH he'd only leave if he was horizontal.
