I agree, but I also turn to prayer when my soul cries out in heartbreak. There were thousands if not millions of people praying yesterday, sincerely. Too often those on the left, of which I am an ambivalent member, dismiss prayer with contempt. It is offensive in a similar way.

I think the difference is that you are acknowledging that your prayers are meant to assuage your own heartbreak and not actually provide tangible relief to victims. Often, the GOP (and many Dems) act as though their prayers are giving victims some resources or resolution to their problem or anguish. We all know that’s not true.

Prayer is not a policy or a law. Asking a lawmaker to engage in more lawmaking and less prayer isn’t a bad thing.

However, your point about those on the left being overly dismissive of religion is well stated. There are ways to articulate that I just said that don’t simply start and end with “I’m tired of hearing about prayer,” which is often the vibe some on the left give off.

That’s it exactly, Ryan. I will spare you other thoughts as I am as ambivalent a Christian as I am a leftist, but yes, the Right is hypocritical, the Left is dismissive, and most of us are in between. Thanks for your comment.

When all the GOP does is offer prayers, it rings hollow. They refuse to actually vote to do anything about regulating guns—which isn't the same as taking every gun away from everyone.

There are plenty of people on the left who are people of faith; I know many of my fellow Dems who go to church and pray regularly. For Andrew to equate the lying vitriol of the RW propaganda machine with Jen Psaki saying enough of the tiired GOP trope of "prayers" is offensive to me.

I wasn’t speaking of the GOP. I assume all their thoughts and prayers are mostly on twitter, which I don’t visit, ever. But I think it’s more helpful to say prayers plus action than f*ck your prayers, which I saw on Bluesky yesterday. I don’t disagree with y’all.
