Dan, I could point out a hundred things that people of faith are doing to ease suffering and protect the vulnerable, but they aren’t bragging about it on social media. I am sorry you feel so cynical. It’s a trap that also leads to doing nothing.

I was referring to the "thoughts and prayers" crowd who make it a point to send them via social media. I am aware and appreciative of the things that people of faith do (and I have been on the receiving end of their efforts). And you're right--there's usually no mention of those things on social media.

IMO, one of the best functions of organized religion is that it provides a structure for altruism.

But I don't believe religion or even belief in a god is necessary to act to relieve suffering and protect the vulnerable. I think good people simply find a way to do good.
