I think, more accurately, the country has rejected what McCain stood for. Bill eventually has to understand the country is not what he thinks it is.

And perhaps has never been. Town and gown mentality has resulted in choices based on anti perceived elitism rather than on anti destructive authoritarianism.

Hannah Arendt in a footnote in one of her several forwards in "The Origins of Totalitarianism" points out that there was awareness and recognition of what Hitler was doing as far as concentration camps and shakedowns for money and it was accepted as part of the deal in Germany until very late in the war. Hitler certainly didn't lose popularity over it.
