I have thought about this for a long time. I have a sibling like these guys. I think folks like these people mostly only care deeply about things that affect them or their families. When things affect "other" people they struggle to feel any connection. They may think it is sad, they may think it is unfair, they may think they would like to help, but they often only do that if it means they will not personally be affected. Plenty of guys/gals will give you the "shirt off their back" becasue they have 99 more in the closet. The people who work to fix the underlying inequality are the people who are doing the real work.
I don't think these folks are racist, fascist, exonphobic, homophobic, or any of the other slanderous terms that can be used against them, they are just fine voting for those people if it means their own situation in life remains extremely comfortable.
Whoops, I just realized that I was on The Bulwark comment board and not The Dispatch. I was wondering where all of the usual "tsk, tsk, some of those Republicans' actions are bad, but quell horreur! I would never vote for one of those Democrats!" comments were. I need to pay better attention.

I should have read this post from another Mary before writing my post, which said basically the same thing, but less eloquently!
