Trump admitted in interviews that he legitimately lost the election, regardless of what he says at his stupid rallies.
When you voted for Trump in 2016, you voted for a guy who made it clear he was a wannabe autocrat, 'Only I can fix it." etc, etc. After he spent four years implementing incremental authoritarianism, including creepy demands for unswerving personal fealty, etc, etc you voted for him again. A vote for Trump was a vote for autocracy. You STILL support him even though it is now beyond dispute that Trump and his GOP collaborators tried to implement the illegal and Eastman plan for overturning the free and fair election to install Trump, dictator style, for a second term. http://cdn.cnn.com/cnn/2021... Eastman told his fellow conspirators that his plan was illegal, but success of the coup would mean there would be no legal consequences. https://s3.documentcloud.or...
No Patriot can support Trump or any Trump-adjacent candidate."
The primaries' results will give a pretty good indication of who the patriots are. If the electoral advantages of the GOP end up first putting petty autocrats in power, and finally elevating an autocrat to the presidency, your friends will have no one but themselves to blame.
Your friends need to ask themselves why they listen to sources who are deliberately misleading them. Will the noise from those clearly right-wing propaganda sources succeed in drowning out the evidence the Jan 6 committee presents in public hearings next month?
Your friends believe the sources they believe because they WANT to believe them. As I have said before, very few of these people are being fooled. They are not patsies in the sense that the wool is being thrown over their eyes. The information is available from a wide variety of sources... and they disregard the sources that they do not like and the information that they do not want.
The public hearings will result in not much. We are way past the point of public hearings. Nobody that needs to watch them is going to be watching them because it is fake news and a Democratic plot to destroy this country.
even many that believe what the committee has found out and what it will say and demonstrate through evidence will ignore it--either out of a sense of frustration/nihilism or because, in the end, they are okay with it so long as it is THEIR side that runs the authoritarian machine.
This crap should have been nipped in the bud 30+ years ago in its gestational stage. Far too late now when you have a multi-billion dollar media empire that depends upon it and a lot of politicians that depend upon it.
You wrote, "they are okay with it so long as it is THEIR side that runs the authoritarian machine. " Exactly, but in their short-sightedness (or lack of reading history), they fail to understand the authoritarian eventually comes after them, one way or another.
People are complaining that the GOP is embracing the White Replacement Theory like this is some sort of new phenomenon. But even as far back as when I was a Rush Limbaugh listener (late 80s early 90s) he was claiming that Democrats only wanted increased immigration (or open borders) in order to increase their voter count (i.e. White Replacement Theory).
This is nothing new with the GOP and their voters no matter how much the press and others want to pretend it is.
I don't disagree with "Your friends need to ask themselves why they listen to sources who are deliberately misleading them." It's just the reality that they do not believe they are being deliberately misled. So the point of my original comment is that we need to understand that this autocratic movement is so much more than stupid, racist, radical, extreme, low-income rubes. It's too easy to dismiss it as such, and it leads us away from coming up with a successful strategy (that I can't yet conceive of), to counter it.
Many understand the movement and its range.. but the media has fallen in love with the tropes and stereotypes they have. We have seen people like the Koch's and Thiel, and the Mercers (no relation) throwing money at this for years. Seen highly educated and non-working class media people (and media corps) pushing it for years.
None of this is particularly a secret. I remember reading analyses of the Rightist/GoP rhetoric back in grad school in the early 90s that was pointing a lot of this stuff out.. about how it worked and why and about who was pushing it.
I mean they need to ask themselves this question after being presented with the facts. I am not dismissing anything. Your friends are probably more dangerous to democracy than the rubes who dominate news cycles.
I copied this from someone's comment somewhere. It's lengthy.

Well, not my friends....

Few believe that They will come for THEM until the knock on the door comes... especially the well-to-do.
