"I believe in liberalism and I believe in democracy. But I’m not certain that “America” writ large believes in either of those things—or is even worthy of them."
Oh boy does this one hit home, sadly. Here's to the rest of us. It's been--and will continue to be--one helluva ride. Glad to have met this little community of ours along the way at least. Shared suffering is better than suffering alone, that's for sure.
I headed here with the same quote. It touched the grief that I feel so intensely. My husband was career army and I was a federal manager before retirement. We love this country and that love guided so many decisions and sacrifices. I’m shaken to see so many thoughtlessly toss over the ideals of the America that could be.
But I felt strength in saying we stay in the fight for our community of believers. I’ve read that no one truly dies until the last person who knew of their life dies. So we have a new purpose - to remember and cradle the embers of the fire that powers our ideals. The purpose will give us strength in this fight. And if the bigger fire is extinguished, the believer community can shelter sparks to birth a future fire.

This is beautifully said, Kathryn. Thank you; it's exactly how I feel.
Hope you and your family are doing ok, Travis.
We are for now 🤞
Very true. Maybe we'll weather this megastorm. If we do, it'll be together.

This is what made me cry.
