"The Privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it."

-US Constitution Art. I §9 ¶2

President Lincoln and subsequently Congress suspended the writ during the Civil War.

Trump loves to analogize immigration to an "invasion." Oddly, he doesn't similarly regard the Jan. 6 episode as a case of "rebellion."

Would a compliant Republican Congress go so far as to enable Trump to suspend habeas corpus? Color me skeptical at least as long as Trump's poll numbers continue to sag.

But talk like Stephen Miller's is probably (?) intended to sow fear and chaos as much as it presages an actual agenda.

Just be mindful of those poll numbers.

Republicans in Congress have proven over and over they're willing to "interpretate" any plain and clear language in order to achieve corrupt results. Redefining "a day" to ACTUALLY mean the rest of the legislative year to prevent bringing a undesirable bill up for a vote tells you everything you need to know about the alternative reality criminals.
