I recently read (I think it was Tom Nichols in The Atlantic) that fear is the actual dominant feature of Trump supporters. So, they feel fear and in response they spread fear. Good governance is supposed to ameliorate those base human instincts, with a structure for civility. And sometimes it works that way.
