As a white South African who left a comfortable life to come to the US in 1978 - as a vote against apartheid - this is galling to say the least.
We were blocked from transferring our money and had to start from scratch here. But we did it for the sake of our 6 children who we wanted to raise in a multicultural country that shared and stood for our values.
We never dreamed that Nelson Mandela would be released from prison, but sanctions by the US and other countries worked to force this outcome, and SA ended up becoming a democracy!
