"Decline is a choice, Charles Krauthammer wrote. Watching the Hegseth hearing, I couldn’t help but think that, for now at least, we have chosen it.
Well, not us, mind you. Not we few, we happy few, we Bulwarkers."
ALL of it well-said, Bill. My heart felt heavy with every word, but there's a strange sort of comfort knowing the feeling is shared, we're not hysterical, and as Charlie Sykes loves to say, "We are not the crazy ones."
Thanks for putting pen to what so many of us feel.
I’d honestly wonder who is actually saying “we haven’t won a war in 30 years” (questionable, for starters) and if they’re willing to say that a political purge for right wing loyalties really seems like a good way to change that.
I don't know. His complete and utter lack of qualifications for a position of that magnitude is staggering.
I expect Trump and company's incompetence to be their undoing, but it is dangerous that it is going to affect the military so much. And it won't be in his term or even the one that comes after. Some president in 2032+ is going to reach for the military tool and find it not nearly as sharp as it should be due to this man.
My only hope right now is his utter lack of competence. It takes a lot of moxie to run a large group effectively. An organization like the US military has a lot of institutional power to ignore the secretary. Looking back a long way, Caligula and Nero did not ruin the Roman state.

And thank you to you for saying what I wanted to say to Bill, but much better.

Very likely to discover that no one saved the password.

Those "institutionalists" will be the first to be purged from the ranks.
Thank you for optimism based on a robust appreciation of history.
