"There is a beautiful saying amongst the Irish peasantry to inspire hope under adverse circumstances: 'Remember,' they say, 'that the darkest hour of all, is the hour before day.'”

The problem with that is the fact that last night (nor this morning) is the "darkest hour of all" - that is yet to come, slowly, painfully, drip-by-awful-drip. For the next few weeks, please spare me any attempts to place the blame for this on the Democratic Party. The entire blame belongs to a sick and diseased GOP who decided, one-by-one-by-many that they would rather have the illusion of power under a dictator than to lose power in a democracy...

More than the GOP. People who don't usually vote came out for Trump. We thought the high turnout was for Harris, but it was for Trump. People, love the boot on the neck.

Yup. And it started with Reagan and Gingrich. Reagan was an addled but genial puppet. Gingrich and others are pure evil.

It was also the election of Obama. The right wing turned rabid when a Black person was elected for two terms. They weren't going to let that happen again.

What amazes me though is if they were this rabid then, why weren't they able to make Obama a one term president?

I have to wonder if it really isn't just, "It's the economy, stupid." Enough economic voters in 2012 gave blame to republicans for the collapse and credited Obama with the small improvement. Now in 2024, Trump gets a pass for Covid and (in their minds) enough time has passed that we should be back to normal and we're not. It may be that simple for enough of the voting public.

And that's not to minimize racism or sexism as factors, but Obama did get a second term and Hillary came pretty damn close to winning. Racism and Sexism aren't the only factors. At least as my day after with no data mind is conceiving of things.

But you see that's all perception, by every measure this the economy in the best 60 years. Less than 4% unemployment, bullish stock market, higher wages. Even inflation is 2.4%. It's true that prices are higher than 4 years ago. They are never all going back down. Deflation is bad for business.

So the reality isn't they voted because the economy was bad People just think it's bad. A woman drives her $40,000 to $80,000 SUV to the grocery store and complains about gas prices and that her eggs cost $4 a dozen.
