So you admit in your piece that there is a grassroots boycott of Disney. A significant one. Why is a grassroots boycott less valuable than one run by Dem leadership?
I read your piece as dismissing grassroots movements in general, and I don't understand why. We the people are the last defense against autocracy, so isn't it a good thing that we're standing up?
This headline was the strangest thing to read after a weekend where all my corners of the internet were dominated by "I canceled my subscription" posts.
Institutional capture could be a story, but lack of boycotts isn't.
I thought that too but I also realized that the fact that organizations aren’t speaking out is a big story itself: it indicates how much worse the institutional intimidation is in this term.
I’ve seen massive response in the comments on various substacks about cancelling Disney. Starting within hours of the event!
(I haven’t had TV in years so I had nothing to cancel.)
You’re so right. In the world we’re in where established politicians all seem to worry most about keeping their seats, major media companies of keeping their shareholders happy, major law firms in maintaining their M&A practicres, what choice have we but to do this on our own?
The Bulwark should never wonder why Democratic Party fundraising is down. It’s true that I am concerned about the party, but I’m afraid The Bulwark only reinforces my concern. This newsletter could be retitled “Democrats Suck and we’re doomed”.
Maybe it does and we are. But are there no positive activities happening anywhere???
