John Donne has an a propos quote for all of us: “Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee.”
That said, the media is now canonizing Charlie Kirk, as are the RW/MAGA pundits. As others have said, where was all of this when D politicians were murdered in their homes? Where was President Orange Snake (POS) with his calls to the governor, open condolences, etc.?
Also today is 9/11. Caught a snip of the speech of POS at the Pentagon. Pretty clear every word was scripted and he was told to behave himself. I was disgusted - he was the man bragging about the height of HIS buildings as the Towers collapsed.
There was a school shooting at the same time as this assassination. Where's the coverage of that?
I want to be a decent person about this, but I'm really struggling. Charlie Kirk routinely said school shootings and assassinations were the price we pay for the Second Amendment. Did he not think he might pay that price? That his family might? That the parents of those children slaughtered in Uvalde didn't sign up to sacrifice them for the Second Amendment?
I want to be a decent person about this. It's horrible that some lunatic decided to kill Charle Kirk. He should be found, charged and prosecuted. If guilty he ought to be incarcerated for a very, very long time. But I also keep thinking back to the things Charlie Kirk said in all those debates. Did he ever expect to pay the price in reality that he said we owed in theory?
The fawning backstories about how Kirk successfully rose up in the MAGA movement are true and accurate. He was also a racist bigot, and there is no journalistic obligation to take his reputation and prior statement through the laundromat.
If Kirk was such a gifted communicator, a complete description of the man should include his actual words on topics like race and feminism. Broad tepid references to how he was a right-wing "provocateur" just don't cut it.
I also want to be a decent person about this but it feels impossible in this “war”. I can’t help myself, I want to hear Charlie Kirk’s family say - We are proud Charlie died for something he believed in. The right to bear arms no matter what.
I have been trying to reason out how I should feel about yesterday.
I empathize with the kids in Evergreen and their families. I used to live in the Denver suburbs, which has been ground zero for school/grocery store/church shootings, so I can basically visualize what happened. My familiarity with the area shouldn’t make it affect me more, but it does. I have high school kids who have expressed fear about going to school, and I can’t honestly say they are safe.
I resent the degree to which the Kirk shooting eclipsed the school shooting. To hear a political figure or pundit (including those on this site, I’m sorry to say) say something like “political violence is not ok” just rings hollow. Yes I agree people shouldn’t be shot for expressing views, heinous or otherwise, but teenagers got shot for merely being where they were supposed to be.
I, a guy who doesn’t go on TV, spends too much of my precious time on earth time worrying for/with his kids about violence. Join the club.
Also, there were invariably 30 odd other murders/killings in the country yesterday, but I guess no one involved in were important enough to make national news.
Charlie Kirk was an adult and chose his path willingly and with full knowledge of the risks. The shootings in CO were kids, not yet in a place to choose their paths. However, folks like JD Vance jave decreed that school shootings are a fact of life, the burden of a free nation.
You're right the killer should be brought to justice. That's the part that works me. When Dem or liberal political figures are attacked physically what you hear is mockery from many on the far right or a conspiracy theory of some sort. Yes people should be brought to justice but why are the Epstein crimes that involved so many both left and right leaning going by the side without even a public humiliation? There is no equality in law.
It's wrong for Kirk to have been shot. It was his right to speak even if much of it was filled with hate.
Several people have already lost jobs merely for saying he used hateful speech!
I feel more sorrow for what us happening to our country than for the death of this young man.
I live in Colorado and had to cut MSNBC over to our local NBC to hear the school shooting story. I guess with ONLY two children killed, Charlie Kirk was more important. I’m sorry he died, but he sure made a lot of people sick of his controversial rhetoric.

A POS in our midst.

Charlie Kirk in his own words... https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/sep/11/charlie-kirk-quotes-beliefs

At least it was him, not his children.

Actually, I did hear about the Colorado shooting on MSNBC. Then again, I was gone most of the day and didn't watch anything until 8pm PDT.
Glenn Kesler left WaPo and now has his own substack. Today he has a run-down of Trump bullshit on the subject of 911. It's extensive. and 100% untrue.
TomD, Are you implying here that Kessler's "run-down" of Trump's 9/11 BS is untrue? It's the other way round.
Dee your point
It's the BS that's redundantly untrue. I guess I was after "not a shred of true."
Just signed up!
Of course. Everything about Trump is a lie.
