What everyone seems to be ignoring is WE ALL SAW IT. His debate performance was NOT GOOD.

Look, I'm a lifelong Democrat (you can look up my voter profile if you want--I'm not a troll and I'm not lying) and I'm going to vote for a piece of burnt toast with a D spray painted on it if I have to. But I'd feel a lot better if we had someone who could bring the fight to Trump and make it about him.

I’ll base my choice for Biden on his performance for 3 1/2 yrs, not on a single debate

Like you, if Joe Biden is the Democratic candidate, I will vote for him. I'm pretty sure that all of us in this Substack believe that Joe Biden has been a good President. Some of us even believe he has been a great President. But after seeing his performance at the debate, & watching & hearing his responses in recent days, what some of us are afraid of is that Joe Biden now - today- does not have the strength, stamina, vigor or mental facility to RUN for President. I hope I'm wrong. I fear I'm not.

That makes a lot of sense except if he's got a condition that involves gradual deterioration, in which case past successes don't outweigh present failures. And that's what people are supposedly trying to figure out.

We all love Joe for saving us from a second Trump term. I will vote for him no matter WHAT, if he's the nominee. However, there are two concerns: 1) we have now all seen and heard just how much he has lost in the last 3.5 years, and 2) even if he beats Trump -- which looks less likely today than two weeks ago, when it didn't look great -- his decline will continue for the next four years.

Again, I love Joe, but my concern and anger is directed at the Democratic Party for not better managing this 'bridge to the future' (Joe's phrase during his 2016 campaign). Is this is the best bridge the Democrats can come up with? If so, then it's embarrassing. They've had four years to figure it out.

Am SO pissed at the Democratic Hierarchy for letting it come to this, & for not promoting all the great Democratic Governors & Senators that are available on the bench! Like you said, they've had 4 years to plan for this.

It's not based on his PAST performance as President. The question is whether he has the stamina and mental acuity to be President 4 more years, and the voters are overwhelming saying "no."

That is a pain-ridden truth that many Biden supporters want to avoid and I do understand where they are coming from. Because I was them. But I'm not anymore.

Same. While I do not worry about him being President because of cabinet, staff, and functioning institutions, and that fact that he is willing to accept guidance (unlike our greatest narcissist), people exclaiming "nothing to see here" are sinking toward the level of the elected GOP's endless spin for their cult leader. While doing so may maximise Biden's chances of winning (debatable), it lacks basic honor. I would rather we lose than give up honor so easily.

Good comment, but I would definitely debate the assumption the Democrats are more likely to win with Biden at the top of the ticket.

You do realize that a major reason the German generals kept fighting when it was obvious to them that Hitler was insane and was leading to destruction of Germany was their "Honor" to the oath they took to support Hitler?

I think you may have misread the comment. I think she is saying that doing the "nothing to see here" routine lacks honor.

I would hope those wanting to preserve democracy would honor their oath to the Constitution. Otherwise, what is the difference?

Oddly, those generals first took an oath to the German constitution and country until Hitler made them take an oath to him. Fully expect the Snake to do the same if he's elected. He's already said his oath of office didn't mean he supported the Constitution.

That's it, right there.

Where have the Dems been in speaking out against trump and in support of Biden? So far I haven't seen many surrogates in support of Biden in years. I fear that the Dems are going to panic again and hand the country over to the magats. I hear many deranged public voices in support of trump but very few sane voices in support of Biden. I haven't heard much support for Biden during his term from the people who the Dems are floating to replace him.
