I’m so incredibly disappointed in The Bulwark right now… I can’t believe that people are still trying to slander Biden after everything he has done for this country. Democrats have absolutely no loyalty and most definitely no sense of shame when it comes to throwing each other under the bus. THIS IS WHY TRUMP IS PRESIDENT! Democrats are too full of themselves and don’t seem to be able to see the forest for the trees!
I voted for Biden and would have voted for him again—proudly! Being moderate, I didn’t agree with a lot of what the Biden administration did, but he was the best person for the job the first time and would have been the best person for the job the second time. If Democrats had fully supported Biden, Trump would have lost. Biden’s weaknesses would have been workable with a great cabinet filled with bipartisan people who the country would see as being able to work together—one of Biden’s greatest achievements was the ability to bring people from the Right, people from the Left, and Moderates together. That’s what the country needed, someone who could bring people together to heal the country.
I knew Harris would not win but I voted for her in the anti-female state of Texas—not because I thought she was a great candidate but because the alternative was too horrible. Democrats cannot seem to read the room. Many moderates voted for Biden IN SPITE of Harris! Within many moderate conservatives and independent voters, Harris brought Biden down—she wasn’t a great choice for Vice President but people were willing to accept Harris if Biden was President. Harris would never have won the presidency, no matter how much the Democrats spent and no matter how many celebrities and intellectuals advocated for her. The hate against women and non-whites right now makes it almost impossible for a minority woman to get elected. If an extremely qualified white woman (Clinton) could not get elected, why in the world do you think a so-so qualified minority woman (Harris) could get elected today? The privilege and arrogance of Democrats thinking that they would be able to make Harris cool enough to shove down the throats of all Americans is a great example of how out of touch they are.
Loyalty matters. The way Democrats character assassinated Biden and threw him out like rancid trash spoke volumes. Many people who were distrustful of Democrats were given proof that you could serve most of your life, work hard, be good, and still be discarded like trash because you were old, white, religious, and male. In a country that is mostly white with an angry group of white men with a large percentage of Hispanics who align with religious conservatives, it must have been frightening to see how Biden was tarred and feathered.
An old, slow Biden would have been significantly better for the country than the evil that sits in the White House right now… if only the Democrats could have realized this, we wouldn’t be where we are today.
Chuck doesn't understand that even if he decided to cave on the CR, he didn't have to do it right away without even a whimper of objection. He could have held up the votes for weeks (and yes the government would shut down) but held the stage in the senate listing all the things that Trump has done wrong. They could see how the public was reacting to the shutdown and if they are blamed and have no support then they can cave. Maybe the Republicans start feeling the pressure from the public and THEY will cave on the CR and produce a clean revision. You never know unless you try, but Chuck just caved.
Get an actual grip on your Democrat derangement syndrome. Objectively, how can you in any way blame this current crisis on democrats loyal to Biden instead of legions of smart people who know better— including elected senators and congress— who enable Trump. It is objectively WRONG for you to focus on the imperfections of a successful president and his successful legacy while Trump and Musk and his supporters lay waste to our nation. If this is Laura Egan, I dislike your writing intensely. If this is the Bulwark, I have to reassess why I subscribe.
I agree with you. The propaganda machine and dark money were a huge influence. Christian Nationalism had its fascist hand in there as well and, let's face it, the American people who came out of the shadows like Children of the Corn as followers of the con man who promised them salvation, to rid them of the "others", and of course, lower egg prices. I'm sick of these articles on the Democrats' failings. Yep, there were many, so, no shit Sherlock. Let's talk about Fox News, Elon Musk, the GOP, the internet trolls, and yeah, Russia Russia Russia. Let's mention some accomplishments and freakin' move on. We need to gather our wits to stop this fascism which is no longer at the door but in the house.
It's easy to dunk on Biden, but consider what he came into office dealing with and the success he had in bringing the country back from the pandemic, January 6, brutal inflation and shattered supply chains. He probably accomplished more legislatively than any one-term president in history. Was he perfect? No leader is. Should he have stepped aside sooner? It certainly seems so. But I really think he deserves credit for accomplishing a tremendous amount in a really tough time.
Perhaps we should be considering that Trump Musk was able to infiltrate the voting systems of swing states and manipulated the results. There are organizations that are looking into this.
Gutsy and important piece. Our defeat in November 2024 did not need to happen. No one bears more responsibility than Joe Biden. We need to all consider what happened and why. Notably, I fear a similar disaster is now unfolding with Chuck Schumer - we have an elderly and ineffective leader essentially saying: "I really like my position, and I will not be forced out."
Now that I've seen how people have reacted to this: I think the staff really needs to pay attention to the fanbase that they've cultivated. A fanbase that accepts no criticism of the party except that it isn't "fighting hard enough", engages in cult worship of an old narcissist, and actively tries to cancel and punish anyone, including Lauren who's barely a month into her position, who dares say the emperor is naked. Reminds you of anything familiar?
They've done an admirable job standing their ground, but they need to take a hard look at how they managed to attract the fanbase that they did. And it starts with acknowledging that people tend to gravitate towards content which punches the side they hate the most, not the side that they agree with the most. MAGA-bashing is fine and all (after all, we're all here because we recognize MAGA as an existential threat to our country), but this is what happens when MAGA-bashing becomes the main purpose of the community. All of the sudden, people don't want to hear your nuanced takes about Democratic strategy anymore. Let's face it - most of the people here aren't interested in smart political analysis. They're interested in their Two Minutes Hate against MAGA. The militant attitude started at the top, and while they're clear-eyed about what to do, they attracted a following full of bloodthirsty fanatics instead of strategic thinkers.
It isn't just this piece. I've seen it creep in for years at this point, and it's gotten worse and worse, until it all spilled out into the open back in July and with this piece. This isn't sustainable to have this large of a gap between the paying subscribers and the content creators. Something's gotta give, and I sure hope it isn't the staff who caves, like I see constantly elsewhere.
Lauren, what WILL it take for Schumer to give up his post? I think I read somewhere a Senator, like Chris Murphy, just needs to declare he or she wants the job.
See Richard Campbell below. THIS IS SHIT. Joe Biden did not leave the race when he should have --Enough. This crucifixion obsession is doing no good to anyone. There is one problem now. Democrats like Schumer and Durbin who are living in the past. If you Bulwark GOP can't get over your wish to string up Biden give us a Break and Leave.
I give you money so I can read this shit? Do Democrats honestly believe that they can win by shitting on Biden’s presidency? That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. One of the strongest economies I’ve ever seen in my lifetime, and I’m in my 60s, which is now being utterly trashed by immoral illegal grifters, and there are people who think that the thing to do is shit on Biden? This is the kind of stupid piece I expect from the New York Times or the Washington Post.
I think it easy to second guess what Joe Biden thought he could do but for many pols, he was a sitting President and that has to be hugely difficult to tell him, hey Mr. President, your too damn old to run again. Not to mention feeling disloyal. There were and are a great many reason the Dems got their ass kicked. So to blame Joe Biden as the principal reason. missed the point and frankly, it's naive. Stop throwing rocks and come up with a better, stronger and informative plan going forward.
I'm truely offended by this piece. Stench?! Rotting food?! Please, give me a break. Mistakes were made for sure & it's time for a reckoning but this does in no way lay totally on the shoulders of Joe Biden.

Anyone who unironically uses "derangement syndrome" is the deranged one.

Laura Egan if this comforts you because someone agrees, think twice. Your premise in this piece is out of line with the moment.
It's easy to dunk on Biden, but consider what he came into office dealing with and the success he had in bringing the country back from the pandemic, January 6, brutal inflation and shattered supply chains. These takes are not nuanced.
You are exactly who my comment was referring to.

No Democrats don’t believe that, but Republicans like this writer do.
She worked in Democratic politics when she was an undergrad and has been a Democrat since. I know because I went to school with her.
