I’m sorry but thanking Brian Kilmeade because he apologized for saying the homeless should be killed, when many in the media and elsewhere are being fired for criticizing Mr. Kirk is weak tea. The person who killed Kirk is an extreme right winger, why is no one talking about that!

Lutnick (and the Democrats too) need to read what the Nobel-prize-winning economist Joe Stiglitz has to say. We have entered a new economic era, a new stage of industrialization in which assembly lines don't generate high-paid jobs because robots do the dirty and dangerous work. And now AI is coming after the office jobs. The billionaires in Trump's cabinet know this, and it's why they are trying to take permanent power right now.

"Any bill to this effect would obviously be unconstitutional, but we’ll wait and see whether Higgins actually tries to write one, or whether threatening to do so is just a particularly unfortunate way for certain people to grieve."

The MAGA SCOTUS apparently has redefined the word "unconstitutional" to mean "anything that inconvenient to the MAGA agenda. That, plus the fact that authoritarians in general will try anything, however legal or moral, they think they can get away with, suggests that this is not merely an "unfortunate way for to grieve."

Does Brazil have a more credible and functional democracy than ours at the moment? Many may not favor the basically socialist presidency of Lula, but it must be said this country told Trump just where to go with his 50% tariffs, with his attempt to extort an escape from justice for his friend in kind. Instead, Brazil sent him a loud refutation. As the Trump mini-me in Brazil received the kind of justice we here were denied, for the same attempted betrayal to nation. Which for many complicated reasons, our justice system could not muster. Brazil produces a lot of beef, coffee and bananas. Today, looking like anything but a "banana republic."

What a surprise. It's looking like the shooter was a member of one MAGA faction shooting the leader of a different MAGA faction. No libs involved at all!

Not that that will make any difference to Trump.

I don’t see any evidence of this besides memes and social media shitposting. There is absolutely no evidence of him being MAGA. His family is Republican but he is unaffiliated and has never cast a ballot. His political views seem unclear.

I’m guessing he was just young and way too online.

The shooter is a follower of Nick Fuentes who is further to the right than Kirk. They thought Kirk was not right wing enough

We actually do not know this to be a fact. The reporting on this has been terrible and we have an FBI that is clearly not trustworthy. I’m very concerned about the way this investigation is being handled and discussed. It seems like everyone is grasping at straws to put him neatly in a box that vindicates their “side.” Truthfully it’s unlikely he has a coherent ideology. Very little information about his motives has been independently corroborated, and it is troubling how many people are stating rumors as fact. He may well be a groyper. We just don’t know.

I too am concerned how this is being handled by the FBI, they should not be commenting until the facts are known, but these guys T**** and Patel always shoot first and then ask questions. Heather Cox Richardson had a great sub stack on this today.

I'm curious if Trump and his Republican cohort will apologize to those on the Left for blaming all of us for Kirk's murder.

So, are we to conclude that Lutnick meant he had to revise his conclusion whose economy was doing so well in June? Too bad he was not asked about that as a follow-up question, but that is par for what passes as MSM journalism today, I guess.

Trump's economy will start when we say it starts. Which may be never given how things are going.

"Back in July, Trump explicitly pegged his sky-high 50 percent tariff rate on Brazilian goods to the ongoing prosecution of Bolsonaro."

I wonder how John, Sam, and Clarence will get around that use of the tariff power two lower courts have said the Felon does not have when they rule on the legality of his tariffs under the IEEPA? An emergency because a friend of a former President objects to that former President being convicted of plotting to overthrow the rightfully elected opponent?

Yesterday I wrote about something George W. Bush said a few months after 9/11:

"We're taking action against evil people. Because this great nation of many religions understands, our war is not against Islam, or against faith practiced by the Muslim people. Our war is a war against evil. This is clearly a case of good versus evil, and make no mistake about it -- good will prevail."

It was in the context of immigrants facing ramped-up ICE enforcement, but I think it's a good reminder more broadly. Every American to the right of Adam Kinzinger is not my enemy. And everyone to the left of Elissa Slotkin isn't the enemy of Trump's or anyone who follows him. Our enemy is a hatred and a ready call to violence and retribution. It's the person who shot at Charlie Kirk (I try not to repeat the names of such murderers, assuming it's truly him), and also whatever or whoever drove him to such a horrible act. Even with him, my faith compels me to love them anyway. I'm trying to do that.

"From the very first day, we learned that policing isn’t just about enforcing the law. It’s about protecting the vulnerable, standing for justice, and being the person who runs towards danger when others run away."

Or as we said so often right after 9/11: "These colors don't run." Meaning running away. Whatever I think about our military response to 9/11 (& believe you me, I could say a lot), facing our problems head-on and not turning it into easy, divisive answers used to be a big part of the American spirit. We could all do worse than aiming for that again.

Interesting how the press obsesses over a few words on the casing, while the decade of gun indoctrination behind this kid doesn’t even get mentioned. Hypocrisy at its finest.

FBI Director Kash Patel finally showed up at the crime scene in Utah. It'll be interesting to see if they yank the Kirk murder away from the Utah authorities and make it a Federal case. That way Trump can play movie director and use the case to bring large amounts of media attention to himself. What a pig.

You can be sure they'll try to yank the case away from the Utah authorities. It's hard to see any legitimate grounds for Federal justification over this case, but that won't stop Patel.

Bill Kristol...THANK YOU for writing about David Rose. I live in Atlanta and have several friends that work at the CDC and crawled over glass in shot out rooms as the gunman continued to fire. President Trump has NEVER mentioned this shooting or the death of officer Rose. He had two kids and another on the way. Rose never got any flags at half-staff and the FBI Director never came here. (RFK Jr. came here, but it did not go well.)

Thank you again for recognizing officer Rose's service. It is almost hard to imagine that 500 rounds were fired with only one fatality...and that the President did not care enough to mention it.
