Good story and we need more like it, but it loses its punch because the anonymity of the subjects. Real names and photos are needed to really humanize these stories and hit home with the MAGAs. The MAGAs easily brush past anonymous data.

Many of us are not pleased by the actions of ICE against hardworking people who, given the chance, will become good citizens. Trump and MAGA world have forgotten that the majority of their ancestors came here without papers. Immigration control can be done in a considerate, compassionate manner but not by those currently in power.

tRump said he is bringing manufacturing back. To 🇨🇦 and 🇲🇽. Coke is closing plants that make cans due to "beautiful " aluminum tariffs. Pepsi is likely to follow suit. *** Unfortunately, this kind of hurt needs to happen. The majority of these plants are in the southern states, Red.

Staten Island,NY, only red borough in NYC, has a plant. Don't know if it produces cans or plastic.***Will MAGA media keep this from their flock?

Adrian - Thank you for bringing this story to light - beautifully written.

I am not sure whether it is a tragic or wonderful story - I sense it is both, depending upon the reader's perspective. You made me feel both joy and sadness! While I am sad for Emily and Diego for the tragic and absolutely unnecessary situation they find themselves in, I am also heartened and uplifted at their commitment to each other, and their collective commitment to their son, and sense the three of them will find happiness and peace whenever and wherever they will be together. So, while I was reading it, I was angry for how they have been treated, however, felt so happy for them that they found each other in this life, and clearly love each other unconditionally. Not everyone has the opportunity to experience unconditional love - so glad Emily and Diego have found it in each other. I will be rooting for them. May they find and live in peace and prosperity.

Also, wondering how JVL will react to this story, following on his The Triad newsletter yesterday telling the story of Ming Li Hui and Kennett, MO. You touch on some of the same issue JVL did when you referenced some of Emily's friends who were Trump backers. I sense an additional post by JVL may be needed, this time on Knoxville.

Thank you, again, for such a great story!

And yet the number of acquaintances who are upset about Diego and Emily will still vote Republican in '26. So I don't want to hear about how nice and sweet these people are.

Thanks to the Bulwark folks like Adrian for sharing. Other than the Native Americans, we ALL have immigrants in the family. The common folks, like this monk, can help others by donating to the legal groups that are challenging trump. In “Letters from an American”, Heather wrote that we are winning 96% of the legal challenges.

ACLU, Brennan Center, Public Citizen…

And, use your money to do the right thing: boycott tesla…

Peace.🙏

Oh Adrian, it’s only stories like this that can get through Americans’ thick skulls. Emily is brave and steadfast. I’m glad I got to know her a little through your words. As for her neighbors, well, this story is happening all over America. I hope it opens some eyes.

Every Trump voter will be called to answer for this when they meet God.

None will pass.

I personally know a family who came here from Columbia 10+years ago. Attempted and denied asylum. Both parents always worked full-time at various jobs in our community and had support from their employers for their efforts to attain legal status. Their daughters attended school. The elders graduated from high school. They left the US in December 2024 and returned to Columbia. I suspect they saw the writing on the wall. While I know they loved living here and could push reality away most of the time, their lives in immigration limbo seemed difficult even before recent events. If they were here now I’d be worrying for them every day.

It's too easy to "catch" the law abiding who come in to the ICE office. Catching criminals would be too hard.

To get immigrants to self deport all that is needed is to start arresting employers who look the other way and don't check documents. I'm not suggesting we do that but it shows how Trump is not serious about deportations. Republican business owners depend on immigrant workers and would fight that policy.

We need comprehensive immigration reform, not made for tv cruelty.

I wonder what the consequences will be for these Trump puppets when this is over! And it will be over, just not soon enough!

I can think of a few consequences, but they’re not legal!

Maybe we can load up Trump’s new Qatar plane and fly them all to North Korea? I would prefer something more permanent and deadly.

I never used to think like this!

My thoughts have gone to the Dark Side because of Trump and Project 2025 and MAGA voters.

I’m glad that this family is together, but it shouldn’t have happened and the MAGA voters need some consequences as well. There is something seriously wrong with this country that hates so many people because they don’t look like you!

And they consider themselves Christians?
