Pay attention to Mark Elias’s comment at the end of this post. These law firms should have stood their ground from the beginning and resisted Trump’s demand for hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of legal work. This is extortion. He’ll keep going back to them to demand more and more because he is insatiable. And if they criticize him or don’t cave to all his demands, he’ll likely have them disappeared or executed. Like Putin or Hitler.
I agree with criticizing the law firms. Anyone should have a backbone that believes in democracy. I don't that we're seeing that from the Democrats in office now or the last couple of terms. I read from time to time in various places how the Democrats used the power of the doj to go after Trump unnecessarily, and I wish someone would explain to me exactly how that is. When did becoming an elected official become a get out of jail free card no matter what the crime?
I find Big Law's behavior in general (with the exception of the handful of firms that have stood up) disgraceful. But I will say this, very few lawyers at even the most prestigious law firms make anywhere close to $20 million. That is reserved for a very small, elite group of primarily corporate partners with the biggest clients. Associates, 'of counsel' and junior partners are not paid as extravagantly as one might think and don't necessarily have the luxury of immediately jumping ship.
Yet another revealing moment in the False Messiah's climate of fear and his protection racket. All the high falutin talk of ideals, taking a stand, integrity doesn't mean squat anymore. It's all about avarice. Such is the "united" in our USA.
I have felt for some time that the assembling of Representatives and Senators in Washington DC is not a good thing. They should serve from the States they represent. Communications technology is all that is needed. Further, since we pick juries from the general population to hear murder trials, I think we could do the same for legislators - certainly not more serious. This takes the money out of most politics and keeps the legislators where they belong.
Critique and challenge from within is one way to not get trapped in tribalism/ conformity. Doesn’t mean destroying kinship alliances with heavy handed condemnation, just discerning accountability for public figures.
They are no different from Zuckerberg and Bezos. Money and power first, ethics and the rule of law a very far second. This is going to sink Harris and the corporate Democrats.
Truly a sad day when those who have already made their millions are still so greedy they won’t stand up defend the little people. No, they would rather cozy up to Trump to assure their continued wealth accumulation rather than fight for democracy. I wonder how they really look themselves in any mirror. Truth be told, it’s all in the timing. Trump will soon weary of your lackadaisical support and drop you like flies. Thanks for NOT upholding the oath you took upon entering the field of law: “As a lawyer I swear to uphold my functions with dignity, conscience, independence, integrity and humanity.” Need I say more-betrayal in its highest form!
I worked for many years as a legal assistant for corporate attorneys and always found them to be pretty spineless. But this is really beyond the pale. They’ll live to regret it.
The mistake we are making is failing to understand who the teams are. It is not the democrats against the republicans, or the progressives against the conservatives, or any combination like this. It is the rich against the working poor. And, make no mistake about it--With few exceptions, the media is on the side of the rich. The fact that Emhoff is still making 20 million dollars a year selling out the progressive working class almost makes me glad Harris lost. The american rich, with few exceptions, are just disgusting human beings.
Make no mistake. Those white-shoe smoothies are paying tens of millions of dollars in pro bono hours as protection money to a gangster who is running an extortion racket. Shame!
Don't think for one minute that they won't make their youngest associates do it, and then deduct the hours they spend on pro bono from their billable hour requirement, so those hours don't count.
Lawyers are trained to work either side of a given question or issue. Mobsters, or, in this case the T. Rump criminal enterprise simply employ anyone they can use to further their enterprise. My guess is that lawyers who remain faithful to their profession will engage with their criminal clients to provide the best defense possible although such clients are dangerous in and of themselves. Since the Immunity Decision has rendered the Legislative and Judicial branches irrelevant to the operation of the unitary Executive branch envisioned in Project 2025 any attempt to oppose policies of the T. Rump criminal enterprise are likely to fail since there is no enforcement power available outside of the government itself. An example is the pardons granted to the J6 insurrection participants which now leaves their 'talents' available for use by the duly elected American government/criminal enterprise. Rinse and repeat with a side order of show trials.
Many more than a million showed up. My wife is trying to document the numbers starting with the small ones, and is up to 1.1m without even getting to most of the big cities yet. Come and help her document the resistance: https://bsky.app/profile/juliahoffman.bsky.social/post/3lm47g5edms2e

Katyal and Emhoff opted out of walking-the walk integrity.

I really don't know if this applicable in this situation, but isn't it good sometimes to have a friend in the enemy's camp?
They aren’t in the enemy camp. They’ve agreed to become the enemy’s bag carriers.

Why do you never see a lawyer on the beach? As soon as one lies down, cats come from miles around and cover them with sand.
