Congressman Glenn Ivey went to El Salvador over the holiday weekend to try to see the man who has become a symbol of Donald Trump’s deportation regime.
Some Repub reps now tell constituents they DID NOT KNOW ahead of voting yes on the budget bill, that it had lines saying ok to have contempt for judge's orders. That's relevant to deportations. The pres does not obey the judges as "he has it wired?" Senate has not yet voted, so you can still call yours.
house was almost 50-50, would have been different if they'd known the bad anti-judge lines were in.
Repeating a kudos from below. The House was almost 50-50 on the budget bill last week. One Repub told a town hall afterward he'd had no idea the bill lets admin disregard judges' contempt rulings, on deportations and lots of other stuff. He promised he would now try to get a senator to remove that language. The problems at the vote, that prevented swings by Repub reps? (1) NO TIME TO READ-- an 1100 page bill was too long to read very well, lots of gobbledy-gook, with (2) NO TIME TO LISTEN--only one hour allowed per party, to discuss or lecture, ahead of the House's vote.
The nasty one hr. rule was approved by a rules committee of 12, called to meet at 1 am, nastily stacked with 8 Repubs who then all voted for censoring discussion. Yes, the Repubs chosen were the problem
Senate has not voted yet?
KUDOS -"Bravo to Representative Ivey and Senator Van Hollen .....Bravo to Chris Newman and Jaime Contreras"
What can we do to oppose ICE in our cities? Is it legal for ICE to be there. Is ICE supposed to wear uniforms with name tags and their faces visible. The men in plaid shirts and masks in court houses waiting for immigrants is disgusting. They look like thugs not officers of the government.
Not just thugs, they look like K lan. The K lan wore black masks in some places when they thought that could help them deny participating in awful deeds. The awful deeds were more awful in the deep south, torture killings and not just parades
Thank you for continuing to try to break through the unconstitutional brick walls that have been thrown up against Abrego Garcia and each of the other who were unconstitutionally removed to a concentration camp in El Salvador. Keep trying. I can't even begin to imagine the horrors and sense of loss with love ones that each one is enduring. I sincerely hope someone can break through #45 2.0's stubbornness and bring them all back home. In my opinion, unless there is someone among them who really has committed heinous crimes, each one who has been kidnapped from the United States and is returned deserves to be put on a pathway to citizenship ASAP.
I don’t care what the Party elders say. I want our representatives to be loud on this issue. Reminds me to call my senators this week. Thanks as always, Adrian.
Don't forget the gay hairstylist, either, and who knows who else is there who never actually was a thug but instead was sent to die in hell as propaganda.
Thanks for reporting on these important stories. None of us can do ALL the things, but if we each do whatever we can do, it will amount to a lot. I haven't pushed myself to a protest since T---p 1.0, but I'm strongly considering June 14th. In the meantime, I do whatever else I can.
That's really heartwarming; I've been doing rallies for decades and my hips can't stand too long in one place any more, but the pure joy of being surrounded by kindred spirits is so uplifting. So many other ways as well. I recently did a kind of "love letter to activism" in photos on my Substack, and intend to write more about the joy of the wins, even if they're small, along the way!
Even the worst criminals shouldn't be held indefinitely without trial in a country that isn't their own. It is cruel and unusual punishment on it's face. Why does anyone trust the government knows who is a criminal and who is not without process? No one would trust their neighborhoods or child to a system like this, but we are all at risk of exactly this treatment without due process ensuring that the people being rounded up are who the government says they are and have done what the government says they have done. ICE is acting like a drug cartel, not like an agency we the people pay for and trust to follow our laws while protecting all of our rights.
Bravo to Representative Ivey and Senator Van Hollen. If fighting for justice for constituents is not an important task for our representatives, then what is? Bravo to Chris Newman and Jaime Contreras, also.
It is astounding that "there are disagreements within the party over how much an issue like El Salvador imprisonments should be prioritized". Are we to ignore the cruelty and injustice towards "the least of these" so we can focus on....what? Whether members of congress will maintain their cushy seats?
I agree! I am appalled that all Democrats don't see the illegal dispatch of people to foreign gulags as headline worthy, every day--just one things among many, but a critical issue!!
They have gone on record, over and over, to that effect. Focus on the Republicans, who could deal with this immediately....but don't. THEY hold the power and Congress.
Thank you to all who continue to fight for the rights of all Americans, born here or not.
But we all need to remember that TRUMP IS PAYING THE LEADER OF EL SALVADOR MILLIONS TO DO THIS. Where money is concerned, don’t expect any help from anyone.
So Abrego Garcia is the tip of this power spear. He gets due process no matter what it takes. Seems appropriate Tudor this congressman to act in the name of his constituent. Jeffries has his priorities but my congressman represents me and my family. No question
Adrian & The Bulwark keeping us updated - thank you.
On the "One Last Thing" about the Trump administration planning to send hundreds of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents to U.S. cities to help with interior enforcement - there's a big story too.
d) How will Americans throughout the US react to the unfamiliar invasive authority of CPB in their communities? In my part of AZ, there are permanent inspection stations akin to local police sobriety checkpoints - but much more militarized and tech-ed up, to conduct immigration inspects far from the actual border 24/7. EVERYONE must stop. Again, know your rights.
e) What will be the costs, paid from what budget, for these CPB re-assignments? ...housing for the re-located agents, vehicles for them, logistics & costs for any persons whom they take into custody?

Attended my first ever protest recently. And am boycotting products of companies that support 47.

Failing to oppose evil is complicity in that evil - Republicrats and Demopublicans alike take note.

GI's valiant attempt makes for good press, but ultimately it was a fool's errand. Too much dinero involved in this case.
Maybe it's time for groups of citizens to go to El Salvador
Thanks again, Adrian.
Democrats conflicted about insisting on habeus corpus? Effing fools.

On the "One Last Thing" about the Trump administration planning to send hundreds of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents to U.S. cities to help with interior enforcement - there's a big story too.
1st - understand the authority CPB does and DOESN'T have. Understand the weirdness of the 100-mile enforcement zone (see https://www.southernborder.org/100_mile_border_enforcement_zone ), and our rights within it (see https://www.aclu.org/know-your-rights/border-zone ). Note that CPB authority also exists at the "Functional Equivalent" of the border, including airports where international flights arrive & post offices where international mail can be received (see https://www.aclu.org/know-your-rights/border-zone ).
2nd - consider challenging Trump's phony "safety & security" message, based on this story:
a) If the border is so dangerous, with gangs & caravans invading our country, why is Trump withdrawing CPB agents to the interior?
b) If the border is safe enough that CPB agents can be withdrawn, how can Trump continue to argue for emergency powers in the Roosevelt Reservation?
c) Is his Exec Order rescinded or mooted? ( https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/04/military-mission-for-sealing-the-southern-border-of-the-united-states-and-repelling-invasions/ )
d) How will Americans throughout the US react to the unfamiliar invasive authority of CPB in their communities? In my part of AZ, there are permanent inspection stations akin to local police sobriety checkpoints - but much more militarized and tech-ed up, to conduct immigration inspects far from the actual border 24/7. You are about to become Little Russia. The world is waiting for Americans to wake up before it is too late.
