Hi Johnathan! This article helped fill in the blanks in my brain on the shutdown!

I do have a question about the Republican spin...

How does ensuring the denial of healthcare to undocumented migrants lead to 50+ percentage increase in yearly premiums?

I understand if the subsidies expire, premiums will double. However, when asked about the shutdown regarding the premium increase, SpkrJohnson continues to say that Democrats not only want to allow undocumented migrants the access to Healthcare, but they also want them to be reimbursed as a higher rate. That's a huge disconnect, imo.

Thanks so much!

Alrightey then! So when something actually impacts GOP MTG's kids then she decides to do the right thing? An invertebrate.

The latest Republican talking point is continuing the ACA supports will fuel "healthcare inflation"..presumably when a large number of working and middle class people just kind of stop going to the doctor and the hospital that will fix everything and tamp down costs

I get why Democrats are going to the mat for health care. It's the right thing to do, and is a political winner. But that fact that MOST of the people who will benefit if they win this live in red states, and probably voted for Trump, leaves me wondering why Democrats could not find a different set of popular issues to bargain over. For me it would be renewable energy, which I suppose also ends up benefitting red states. But at least it is something nearly everyone in blue states is for, and the planet is losing patience with us all.

Funny how the rethugs melt when it comes back to bite them. When they wake up and come to the conclusion that it's hurting their own families, they back down. Hopefully, that will happen to more of them. I saw a list of the states that would be hurt the most and all re red states. Where are their representatives? Afraid of poking the orange bear?

Always entertaining to see the Republicrats eat their own children, just wish they would leave mine alone. My guess is hell will be frozen over long before any Republicrat deserts the party because "owning the libs" and destroying the "deep state" is overwhelmingly satisfying. All the rest is just collateral damage. YMMV.

It seems likely to me that as the shutdown progresses it may very well deliver a "win" to the Demopublicans once The Don decides he has had enough and sends Congress home for an indefinite recess so he can exercise his powers as the Unitary Executive defined in Project 2025. Solves a bunch of problems for the T. Rump criminal enterprise and avoids the need for those pesky midterm "elections", definitely a twofer. Having complete control of the Legislative and Judicial branches comes with certain perks, no?

When will someone, ANYONE, summon the guts to confront the “devout Christian” Mike Johnson about his incessant lying?! Why is one’s religion off-limits to debate?

Thx for the link to the actual Democratic position. I didn't know it included restrictions on Trump’s use of executive power. Bill wrote about the Dems' shutdown strategy two days ago in Morning Shots and didn't mention it.

"The GOP’s case is intellectually coherent ..." - Yes, it is. But their position isn't what is framed here. Their argument is that people do not have a right to health care, so only those who can afford free market health care should have it. That is a rational and defensible position. It is also extremely unpopular among the majority of Americans who would be screwed by that position, so the GOP refrains from saying it out loud. But deep down inside, that is their position and the more honest of them do say it from time to time.

Republicans are desperately going through the boxes of Top Secret material stored in the bathrooms for the "Outlines of a Health Care Plan" referred to by Trump during the debate. So far, all they can find are more drawings of nude underage girls with Trump's signature. But no worries, JD Vance just covered for the Pres. by stating that the Healthcare plan was eaten by a dog, which subsequently was consumed by an illegal immigrant, who unfortunately has been deported to South Sudan. Now we have no idea where he is. "But we're on top of this", stated the VP as he giggled with Stephen Miller of the corner of the playground, I mean, the White House.
