"GOP Unity Slips on ICE." Your title wins the internet today.

Clay Banes's avatar

Best ICE pun I've read.

Dorothee's avatar

The subtitle is pretty good too.

Susan Troy's avatar

I’ve just glanced through this. I cannot imagine being a Republican at this point in time. Saying nothing while human beings are being kidnapped, maimed, and killed is being complicit in evil. What joy or vindication these individuals feel is beyond me. It truly is.

Peter H.'s avatar

While the end result is the same abdication of their office, I remain convinced that only a handful are true believers experiencing "joy or vindication." The majority by far are abject cowards who only care about preserving their own jobs and not getting harassed by their own true faithful.

Cranmer, Charles's avatar

I wish I could agree. I think most MAGAts are MAGAts. is to see their perceived enemies suffer -- the worse suffering the better.

steve robertshaw's avatar

Yea, I mean, just sticking to the Senate, it's obvious that Cruz loves it, R. Scott, R. Johnson, M. Lee love it , Tuberville, Cotton, Mullin love it - heck, I'd be surprised if less than half the R tribe in the Senate didn't love seeing people who didn't vote for them suffer. And let's not even get started on the House!

Jennifer's avatar

I've been emailing my Republican representative and Senators and focusing on the second amendment issue since that's probably the only thing their warped little brains will recognize. I don't expect them to change their position but it's nice calling out their total hypocrisy.

J AZ's avatar

My new script: "Does Rep/Sen _______ support our 2nd Amendment rights?" {answer guaranteed to be YES from my 3 Republicans}

"Then where is their statement concernment Greg Bovino and Kash Patel attacking our 2nd A rights?" {...?... }

"Today the president said 2 quotes: 'he certainly shouldn't have been carrying a gun' and 'you can't have guns... you can't walk in with guns' " Do you side with President Trump or with our 2nd Amendment rights? { I know I'll never really get to ask 'em; they never have a town hall or open meet'n'greet }

Jennifer's avatar

I like it!! I haven't been calling them but maybe I'll start.

David Court's avatar

Please do!! Mine are all Ds.

William Wood's avatar

Pretti should not have been carrying a gun to a demonstration, said Donnie Diapers. But all his January 6th rioters that were armed were great patriots. Well, Mitch McConnell always admitted that hypocrisy was part of the GOP game plan, so I guess there's no changing them.

Katherine B Barz's avatar

They don’t feel vindication or joy. They feel power over weak people that feeds their egos. Lord Acton said “Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.” It exacerbates a person’s frailties, and is the most addicting thing in the world.

Greg WF's avatar

That’s why before I became a U.S. Air Force Basic Training Instructor, I had to take the MMPI, and talk to an Air Force headshrinker to make sure I wasn’t prone to abusing power. Did any of these ICE/Border Patrol?

Joanne's avatar

ROFLMAO. They wouldn't even qualify for a H S diploma let alone knowing what you are talking about.

Katherine B Barz's avatar

Doubt it. The first thug who killed Renee Good, Ross, was dragged in a vehicle while he was on duty six months ago. If a police officer was in an accident like this, I would guess that the officer would receive some treatment that would certify he or she was cleared to go back to work. I don’t think he did get help, and I don’t think he should have resumed his activities. He was, what, a twenty year ICE agent? He was no green recruit. Just a mixed up thug.

Susan Troy's avatar

We have a lot of rethinking to do going forward.

Mark Clark's avatar

VOTE REPUBLICAN: Congress needs more potted plants.

Susan Troy's avatar

Yes, indeed. They will benefit from all those greenhouse gases.

Janet Wilson's avatar

Ice has no business being in business at all, let alone at the Olympics, let alone in a foreign country.

They are murderers and terrorists...even putting the murders aside, it is not ok that they smash windows, abduct with no due process, beat folks up at gunpoint and threaten them with imprisonment; you don't need to watch any more videos to know that, Rep. Grotham...and by the way, have YOU looked into the safety of girls and women in ICE captivity? Perhaps you could get back to us on that.

BriDub's avatar

Shouldn't it be the Secret Service providing security? Maybe they hired so many new ICE people DHS doesn't have enough room for them all.

Greg WF's avatar

It is common for ICE agents to backfill on SS protective details during the Olympics, and especially during the presidential campaign season. It’s usually pretty easy to ID the ICE guys, because they are fat.

Janet Wilson's avatar

Good grief. I wonder if they will get actual uniforms, or are they sticking to tee shirts, worn jeans, running shoes and face gaiters?

James Byham's avatar

Can of Bud in one hand, Marlboro in the other.

Weswolf's avatar

Thanks for letting us know that the decision to send them isn't unusual. I've been telling myself, "Surely it's not to keep our athletes from defecting." Ridiculous, yes, but a sign of our weird situation.

Janet Wilson's avatar

I think it is unusual in that ICE is now staffed by untrained bounty hunters. Formerly trained staff would perhaps have been used.

ICE is now welcomed nowhere.

James Byham's avatar

Don't call me.......

Sheila Brown's avatar

This is what I thought. This has nothing to do with immigration enforcement. I imagine that the Italians don't want these untrained thugs roaming their streets.

David Court's avatar

Are they going to be at the World Cup? I wonder how many "wrong-skin-colored" fans from South America, African, the Middle East, the Far East, the Orient are rethinking their tickets and hotel rooms. If they get even a portion of the news flowing out of Minneapolis or Chicago or wherever the I Cause Emergencies troop is to be found, they should definitely rethink supporting economically a country that not only tolerates but encourages that kind of behavior.

Martin Knutsen's avatar

Hell, even old corrupt as f**k Sepp Blatter from FIFA is warning against going to the US.

David Court's avatar

I guess he wants to live to be a ripe old age and not get caught in the cross-fire.

Seek's avatar

He’s stayig home and watching on TV per his statement

Patricia Wilson's avatar

Unfortunately, my cynicism makes me think they are angry more about possible electoral repercussions than the fact that people are being murdered and brutalized.

J AZ's avatar

"Dammit, you're rocking our gravy train" - every Republican in both houses

Seek's avatar

I see you have met Republican politicians...

The Digital Entomologist's avatar

"...maintain Americans’ confidence in our justice system"? "Maintain"? It's gone. It was gone the moment Trump started appointing toadies like to organizations that are expected to foster justice. The justice system in America is now "for my friends, everything. For my enemies, the law".

E. A. Bare's avatar

It was gone the instant he appointed Bondi and Patel and the pathetic GOP Senate approved them.

The Digital Entomologist's avatar

Yes, the Senate’s role in rubberstamping the elimination of justice as a bedrock principle cannot be ignored.

Kathy Loves Flowers's avatar

Seriously! Is he kidding? The justice system is damaged beyond repair already. From the Supreme Court to the FBI to Congress the DOJ etc etc etc. I have absolutely no faith in our justice system. Even to call it that is an oxymoron. I no longer trust anything they say or do.

The Digital Entomologist's avatar

I think JVL has written how it can be repaired. It requires accountabilty. And it must be done.

James Byham's avatar

DOI , department of injustice . 🙄🌊

David Court's avatar

"the law"? For the Felon all that counts is HIS LAW, meaning whatever brain fart he has at the moment. Next Executive Order: If I say it, it must be true.

Andrew Joyce's avatar

Isn't protection the role of the Secret Service? Are they not flashy enough? Dumpy, masked, heavily armed goons "protecting" our homegrown fascists in the birthplace of Fascism is too rich. Meloni is a cagey politician but I expect ordinary Italians won't take kindly to this sort of cosplay.

Greg WF's avatar

It is common for ICE agents to be used on SS protective details during the Olympics, and during the presidential campaign season. Secret Service manning is not sufficient.

The ICE guys are pretty easy to spot. They are usually the fat ones.

Andrew Joyce's avatar

Honestly, I am surprised. I assume pre-Trump these were professionals. Now they’re degraded and reviled.

Greg WF's avatar

I worked with some of them, and they didn’t act like psychopaths. But they were held to standards, and had to follow the law.

This administration is telling them they can do whatever the hell they want. Humans need robust oversight when they possess the power a law enforcement officer does.

Andy in WI's avatar

Wow, Grothman is my rep. He doesn't have any convictions so if he's willing to go on the record his internals must be really bad in what is otherwise a red district. Burn Glenn, burn.

The Digital Entomologist's avatar

I got sent to his office by my rep when I was asking about BadgerCare in the Scott Walker days because he was the guy who would know what they were planning. I have nothing good to say about him except that I'm glad that he used the word 'murder'.

Diana E's avatar

Susan Collins never fails to disappoint. Mainers deserve better.

Sumi Ink 🇨🇦's avatar

Never understood what Mainers see in Collins to begin with. She's the definition of the word 'disingenuous.' Her most memorable line, "I think he (Trump) learned his lesson" after J6, might be the all-time worst take in political history.

Bonnie's avatar

I think she said that after the first impeachment as a rationale not to convict. She did actually vote to convict the second time, but to me, that makes where she is now much worse.

RonW's avatar

ICE provide security for a delegation? Or even just as bodyguards - that is not even remotely connected to immigration or customs. Just more evidence that this is about building an armed force personally loyal to the dictator to enforce his will on the population.

Greg WF's avatar

No, it is common practice for ICE agents to augment Secret Service during the Olympics, or the campaign season. It’s nothing sinister.

Every Republican Senator named in this article voted 'Yea" on confirming Kristi Noem - see https://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_votes/vote1191/vote_119_1_00017.htm

Every one of them was said to be a legally capable, conscious adult prior to that vote on 1/25/2025. In a country with enormous access to mass media, they knew or should have known that Noem's experience, preparation, capabilities, and character all fell far short of the requirements of that position.

My 2 Indiana senators, as usual, are too timid to have risked put a serious opinion nor issued any press release on their websites regarding the federal government killing 2 citizens in MN this month. They prefer to lay low; quite adept at it. Todd Young ventured onto the thin ice of Xitter to repost the letters Rand Paul issued that called for testimony from ICE, CPB, & CIS. Young's hard-hitting statement: "Law enforcement officers have a challenging job and deserve our support. Providing the American people with the full facts is an important part of maintaining public trust." Ironically (?), one of his other most recent tweets was about a March for Life. Apparently when he picks lives worthy of marching for, a mom and a nurse don't rate a mention.

Sen. Jim Banks' recent tweets commemorate the Holocaust, then go on to praise Trump, ICE, DHS, Tom Homan, deportations, and the Golden Dome. Please keep me in your prayers

Allenby's avatar

Interesting that the Italians understand what ICE is doing much better than your run-of-the-mill Fox viewing redneck. Did they improve since Silvio Berlusconi?

Definitely don't want to be mistaken for John Fetterman. That would take a hoodie, since I have hair.

It is bittersweet to hear these Born Again Republicans who let Trump roam free on the political landscape for a decade. Was everything up to now just cool with you REPUB? Even Liz Chaney a born again non Trumper voted with him 96% of the time in Trump 1.0. The monster didnt come out of hiding in Minnesota. The monster was born in 2016 coming down the golden escalator. Many of us saw it then and were almost as horrified then. But I guess he served your purposes and your mega donor masters. It took a murder of an innocent American by masked un badged cops to finally turn your head around. Well OK. Just do me a favor and when the dust settles and Trump moves on to new crimes and fuckery, you will be just as outraged (as you should be, because all of it is wrong). Getting on the right side now is a win win for your politics and conscience. Spend your time wisely in Congress. Do good for people and stop accepting or allowing the MAGA BS to go on. People are dying for one mans ego. It must stop. A united voice must cut through the lies and evil and wash it away before it can never be washed away. Tribalism and Fascism end up in the ruined dustbin of history. We will be there too if we are not careful.

John Murphy's avatar

Nothing says “We’re not trying to turn ICE into a Praetorian Guard, honest!” like bringing ICE agents outside the country as personal guards…

Greg WF's avatar

No, it is common for ICE agents to augment the Secret Service during busy seasons like the Olympics, or campaign season. It is nothing nefarious.

Allenby's avatar

“We have people coming from far and wide to demonstrate and disrupt things, which is just a recipe for disaster."

I guess Glenn Grothman doesn't do irony. At least his filter is loose enough to let the word "murder" out.

Nell's avatar

He thinks all these paid agitators shouldn't be murdered. It's something I guess.

Kathe Rich's avatar

Well, Dr. Robby looks hot in a hoody, but in the 3 hospitals where I worked as an ICU RN, they were NOT part of the dress code. If you think about it, they are very problematic in terms of both infection control and safety.

Trump claims victory for the immigration work & 'progress' for his 1st year ?????

This is bad news !!!!
