I too grew up on the Redbirds. Late in the 1963 season, Dad took all 5 of us kids to one of The Man's last games bc he wanted us to be able to say we'd seen Stan Musial play. At the start of '64 season one of the local papers sponsored the Straight A ticket program for students at any school, elementary through college. If you had a solid B average, you got your pick of 6 games, 2 tickets to each. Dad was always my date and those 6 games in 1964 got me hooked. I got those tix through my senior year in high school in 1969. Man, those were great times.

I saw Mike Shannon's towering homer hit the scoreboard in Game 1 of the 1964 World Series. Don't know how many bases I watched Lou Brock steal and if Curt Flood was on base behind him, watch for the double steal. Brock was dangerous, always a threat, distracted the pitchers.

1964 Lineup

P Bob Gibson

C Tim McCarver

1B Bill White

2B Julian Javier

3B Ken Boyer

SS Dick Groat

LF Lou Brock

CF Curt Flood

RF Mike Shannon

Good times

Beautiful article sir. I remember as a young staff Captain in the 1st Armored Division TOC at BIAP in 2003, after you had arrived to replace LTG Hernandez as the ADC-S. I showed up one day for my shift, just to see that beautiful bright red StL Cardinals cap sitting on your desk. Also beautiful!

BTW: Where did you go to highschool? (J/K, I know....just a little St. Louis inside humor).

Come see us in Cincinnati! Today's double header was a great start to a five (!) game series with the Reds and the Cardinals!
