Thank you for bringing the John Candy documentary to my attention, Sonny. I will watch it this week. I was and still am a big JC fan. I didn’t know him, but I felt like I did. He seemed so genuine, a truly lovely human being. My father died suddenly when I was 6 years old, 25 years before Candy died…both were 43 years old when they died. I remember sobbing like a baby when I heard the news of John’s death. Sounds ridiculous, but it felt like losing my father all over again. Anyway, he touched my heart and I miss him.
Joe Montana pointing out John Candy in the stands to his team mates to settle them down before leading the team down the field to win the Super Bowl is one of my favorite stories about him.
South Park is going after Trump *hard.* The latest episode features Trump beating off with tweezers, and also in stirrups with his butthole and micro-phalus exposed at a Planned Parenthood office. Matt and Trey want to be sued *so* badly, but sadly Trump hasn't taken the bait yet.
JD Vance as Tattoo, Trump's sexcapade-enabling sidekick, is also hilarious. It's the best JD Vance meme ever. Why won't he sue too, dammit?:)
Dr. Tongue's House of Cats. The line about his dinky had me laughing my head off just a couple weeks ago. I watched SCTV on TV for years. It makes me sad to see John Candy and Joe Flaherty, knowing they are both dead. But I loved the Monster Chiller Horror Theatre bits. My entire family still says, "Ooo. Very scary". 😄 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMQ8qSEVFo0 And doesn't Catherine O'Hara look like a teenager in that bit!
I hope you're referencing "The Vispering Volves," the Ingmar Bergman that Count Floyd inadvertently shows. "It was depressing! You don't think it's scary to be depressed?"
Yes, that's another great Dr. Tongue episode! She does look so young there.
I agree about seeing John Candy and Joe Flaherty. Sad to think they're gone.
I was in high school when SCTV aired and I watched it every weekend. I was thinking of so many great sketches: shower in a briefcase; Di Maggio's on the wharf; Bill Needle yelling at Rupert Holmes & Chuck Mangione; Jackie Rogers, Jr.; Rusty von Reddick. A friend relates Seinfeld to everyday events and I do the same with SCTV. What a great show.
Joe Flaherty had this weird Greek character named Elkie (something like that). For some reason, it made me laugh hysterically every time he brought that character out. And who could forget Guy Cabellero? LOL!!
I immediately go to Count Floyd (the flashing eyes are classic) and Sammy Maudlin when I think of Joe Flaherty. And who can forget Unnecessary Surgeon? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=la3PjHqq0w4
I wanted to mention something, speaking of Don't Take Me Alive: My wife & I saw Larry Carlton live a few years ago. He was awesome. I would absolutely see him again if he comes around.
One other thing: I'm 99% sure I saw Donald Fagen in a bakery in Providence April 25 (around 1:00 pm). He was wearing a purple NYU pullover hoodie and came in with a guy around his age. He was about 5'10" and walking with a limp (sounds like a character out of My Rival). He's so distinct looking it had to have been him. I stood nearby hoping he'd ask the other guy if there was gas in the car or maybe if he'd care to explain but no dice.
Yes, good catch and great song! My two enduring loves from my youth are Steely Dan (every album, especially the first seven) and SCTV. Glad to know you're out there too!
Haha, I listened to the Aja CD on my way home from work Friday. Twice, all the way through, because there was a gigantic traffic jam. Steely Dan made it all so mellow for me, though. :)
Try again. I want to comment on South Park. I haven’t watched it ever, but I have seen frames including Trump, and now it looks like Vance and others have been worked in. I think it’s time to have a full episode on Mike Johnson and John Thune. I’ve watched clips of their speeches on the MSN homepage, and I couldn’t believe the lying nonsense they were spouting. It sounded like they were trying to stir up violence against the No Kings demonstrations or scare people off.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles is one of the greatest cultural movies ever made. It lacks almost nothing we like: flat-handled situational humor set alongside the background of people we love- even some who may no longer be here. Curtain rod rings to buy meals when we're flat broke, owing to the magician skills of a salesman whose lumpy sincerity could sell a brand new bridge to Brooklyn. Colin Hanks has given us a reason to remember the full greatness of comedy. Which is the way we cope with so much that didn't start out funny, but would inevitably be made so. In order to deal. Is there anyone who explains this better than John?
My favorite is The Great Outdoors!
Jonny Larue as the science guy. And Only the lonely.

I was young when I watched it but his role in Once Upon a Crime was very underrated

Hello to a fellow Steely Dan fan. :) (One of my all-time fave Dan tunes, BTW.)
I wanted to mention something, speaking of Don't Take Me Alive: My wife & I saw Larry Carlton live a few years ago. He was awesome. I would absolutely see him again if he comes around.

Good move! I had an older car with a 6 cd changer and it had all SD albums. The trick was rotating one out every now and then.

I will try the Candy documentary - I was wondering if it was worth it.
Has anyone else wondered if South Park isn’t doing Trump a favorite by showing him energetic and coherent. He hasn’t seemed that alive for years
My comment addresses South
Park
Planes Trains Automobiles
John Candy as Divine singing "Santa Being My Baby Back to Me"in a SCTV Christmas special.

Uncle Buck! One of the movies that defined my childhood.

Priceless.
