This is one of the most poignant and well-written pieces about Memorial Day that I have ever read. Thank you for writing it, and thank you to all of the veterans who have served our country.

"...shoulder to shoulder, prepared to die - him for his country, me for mine, and us for ours."

If one wonders how an American patriot speaks, he need look no farther than the words written here today. And if we wish to truly honor the patriots who are now silent - not just today, but every day - we will remember this sound, and resolve to let its echo remind us each and every time we think this country belongs to anyone other than all of us that, in the end, it does not.

Each American's idea of what America is, is what it truly is: an idea. And no single one of these may lay claim to the whole.

Your country, but not just yours. My country, but not just mine. Our country, a land for all of us. And our ideas. And our lives.

Thank you, Commander Johnson. Not just for your service. Nor just for your patriotism. Thank you for your heart, your American heart. For no other kind could have produced these words that you gifted us with here.
