I have not seen it yet. Sounds like a must see. I may wait to see on my flat screen (at an older age, theaters are a bit of a pain). So far the coverage is supportive - so that is good.
So the movie is so awesome that most of the review of how it will be a “touch stone” of a generation is actually about the director and how much you like Nacho Libre? Also, trying to stretch it much- movies about creative people in a world that doesn’t understand them”… really? Stereotyping middle America and making them look dull and stupid isn’t brilliant, and the Minecraft movie isn’t even about Minecraft. The fans of Minecraft are already trying to forget this, according to
teen boy gossip central - aka gamer chat on Xbox and PS5.
I would say you are … misunderstanding what this newsletter is. It’s less a review of the movie than an effort to place it in the context of the director’s other films.
Glad I read this in time to catch the last showing of Warfare in IMAX at my local theater! 100% agree that it wouldn't have hit the same streaming it at home because the immersive sound amplifies the impact (literally and figuratively).
Look I’m not going to say it’s a “good” movie, precisely. But it is very much “a movie by the guy who made Napoleon Dynamite,” and that counts for something.
Since it looks like I'm likely to be roped into seeing Minecraft in the theater this weekend, I really appreciate the reference to 1990's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I hope this is the cinematic experience for my kiddo that TMNT was for me. And I always appreciate an auteur's efforts, even if it doesn't entirely work out.
I saw the movie under similar circumstances and was prepared to lothe-watch it. It was 1 hour and 50 minutes of entertaining escapism that I didn't know I needed. Loved it. And I can't believe I just wrote that.
Now it has me thinking about Gen X and 80s nostalgia. And generational team work that ignores that one other generation. And the casual way the powerful villain is female and it's no big deal. The hilarious dude missile played completely straight. I'm kinda passed about it, but I'm going to buy some tots and serve them for dinner tonight.
We did see it! Your experience mirrors mine as well. I'm really happy to hear that audiences have been "getting into it" in a participatory way. A couple people yelled things I couldn't quite make out (but were clearly in good fun) in our theater. I learned what that was all about later. ("Chicken jockey!")
My kiddo has been quoting his favorite bit from the movie.
Since I'm sure we'll end up with this on Blu-Ray, I'm interested to see what I think on a second viewing. :-)
Whenever I hear that Truffaut I like to point out that Spielberg took the counter and Spielberg is right. Most war films not set a long time ago on a galaxy far far away are anti-war.

Jared Hess plus Jack Black plus Jason Momoa, immersed in Minecraft hellscape. Sorry but Rotten Tomatos can suck it.

I’m so glad you caught it in a theater!
This review actually makes me curious enough to want to see the Minecraft Movie. And I’ve never played the game. Once.

That's the reason I'll see it!

Looking forward to Warfare.

Warfare is phenomenal.
