Immigration may be the area where Trump might be most tempted to overreach. Many passionately share both his hates and his fears, and might be most willing to sacrifice civil liberties. But most Americans have an overall good view of immigrants.
Concern for the rule of law and the Constitution an important reason to stand up to Trump on this, but it is also important for economic reasons. Even "illegals" are a positive for the American economy and sustaining both Social Security and payments on the debt, and most immigrants are here legally and contribute even more. We need immigration for laborforce growth and to KEEP America great. Both economically and morally.
Bill, you make a convincing argument re attacking T on this issue.
Andrew, great wordsmithing: "They’re not asking Congress to kill the programs; they’re killing the programs themselves and asking Congress to sign the coroner’s certificate."
Elon and spreading his genes. I guess the "genius" doesn't realize that geniuses don't always have genius kids, and if one parent isn't a genius, the odds go down even more. BTW, the "genius" doesn't have an official IQ score. It's all supposition. Given his behavior, I really doubt he's as smart as people think he is.
It's almost as if they're trying to destroy America as we know it. These people are evil, mentally unstable, without any moral compass. While largely ignorant and/or inept, their damage is no less real and deep. The challenge we're facing becomes clearer: not to try to save the corpse, but to focus on the future of the living and to define the world we want. How do we protect ourselves and our resources in this fight? Universities are beginning to come together in mutual defense alliances. We all must do likewise in every way we can identify. We must be visible and relentless.
Our strength is in our common purpose and commitment. I'm so grateful for the leadership and clarity provided by outlets like the Bulwark.
Re: the section on Newsom News... ... does this mean we'll now see Tim Cook cozying up with Gavin?
Re: fighting back at trump policies.
The day that we all, sort of accidentally, witnessed a Trump-Gendarme kidnapping of a Tufts graduate student should have been the day our retired Presidents, retired Legislators, and a whole host of Libertarians, all sorts of Lawyers, and yes any MAGAs left who __might__ still value the U.S Constitution .... We should have seen them march on to the White House green, bought full page ads in the NYT, and WAPO in protest. IMHO, it's time for some full engagement on their part as well. Bush can take a break from painting for a week, or so,... seems to me
Keep it up. And, California is leading the opposition right now, never mind how much Gavin Newsome wants to be president. THEY ARE STANDING UP, judges are standing up. Hell, Iowa farmers and a Senator from Maryland are standing up. I feel like I just had a B-12 shot. Standing by for the banquet.
According to JD Vance, smart Yalies like himself understand that big systems will make errors - and therefore it's stupid to worry about the people who are victims of those errors.
The White House appears to be overreaching, but this could be a calculated pre-planned effort to make the USA a white ethno-state in "boiling the frog" fashion
1. Start at a low boil by going after brown and black immigrants who have been accused of committing serious crimes. Very minimal public outcry there, instead overall approval.
2. Raise the temp 5 degrees and go after non-white immigrants they accuse of being a national security threat by their speech. The MAGATs use the term "antisemitism" without a precise definition and it covers a lot of ground. Not a lot of public pushback because all most people know is that antisemitism is bad.
3. Raise the temp 10 degrees more and start rounding up any brown and black people here legally or illegally, because they happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Ship them out of the country before any legal efforts can be made. Due process means nothing to the executors because they are working to a higher goal: a white ethno-state. More members of the public start to get very uncomfortable.
4. Raise the temp 15 degrees and tell the legal system to pound sand. Again, obfuscating and outright lying defy the rule of law, but the MAGATs are doing "god's work."
5. Raise the temp 20 degrees and start disappearing naturalized non-white citizens who have some sort of criminal record. The public is starting to protest, but the courts are so weak there is no recourse.
6. Raise the temp to a roiling boil and start disappearing naturalized and "home-grown" citizens just because. These citizens have no criminal record, but belong to the wrong political party, have spoken unacceptable beliefs, have supported unacceptable organizations, or have insulted or criticized some MAGAT entity. The public stops protesting because there his no power to correct it.
I don't think there's any doubt that the hardcore Trumpist ideologues want to make the U.S. a more exclusively white Christian country. Some are quite explicit about the "Christian" part. The "white" part is more hidden, but definitely there.
The plan all along has been to codify these DOGE cuts into the federal budget through the reconciliation bills they will pass this year and next year. Then, when Democrats win the House in 2026 (but not the Senate or the Presidency), they will refuse to allow passage of any continuing resolution that doesn't cut further, or at least maintain, the then-current spending levels. Democrats will have to live within those means, because their only recourse will be a government shutdown that it's already been established, will allow Trump and Musk to cut even further.
If the Democrats retake the White House and Senate in 2028 (the Senate will be a very heavy lift, even if they can win the EC), they won't be able to rehire all those people fired by DOGE. For one thing, most of those people will have retired or taken another job. And even if they could find the people to rehire, it will require a massive spending increase and tax increase that will be politically impossible to pass with the margins they'll have in Congress.
Remember, one of the reasons Trump is winning is because a majority of Americans resent government workers and are afraid of immigrants, regardless of what they tell pollsters about specific issues related to either. While a lot of people might disapprove of the methods Trump uses to hurt certain groups, they support the hurting of those groups in principle.
Trump and his lackeys, want to remain a superpower without any of the responsibilities or obligations involved. The "memo" is typically Trumpian, an example of how it works for him - make an outrageous claim or demand to see what traction it can yield, and pull back if necessary. "A win is a win", even if it's a small one as the demand/claim starts from zero. In reality the negative consequences take time to show up, but they do! In any reasonably long time span, globalisation always carries on. It's capitalism, how it works. Marx knew this and said so. Xi may be a Stalinist but he's a much better Marxist than Donald Trump is a capitalist! China is going to be the big winner in this fight and the US a really big loser. No one is going to trust the US until it will no longer matter. Trump may be driven to greater extremes as his failures become more obvious, and the world will suffer for it.
I was told that ICE came to our local teaching hospital in plain clothes with visible guns at the hip. They refused to identify themselves and were not let in. The hospital called the police who told them they had to identify themselves or be escorted out. The said they were from ICE and then left. I think this was a scare tactic. This is a teaching hospital and medical school with folks here on work and student visas. The hospital also provides care for the poor in the area. Probably some are undocumented. As word gets out, I fear they won’t come back for needed treatments. Have they no decency!
Vance is like too many others that purportedly have law degrees, usually from Harvard or Yale, and yet...Due Process is nothing like what he said. Process is carried out by the courts. When a person is due process it is carried out by the courts. If the factors that Vance lists out have anything to do with persons or property that is weighed and determined by the courts. Bypassing the courts because leaving things to the judgment of the courts is inconvenient or inexpedient CANNOT be due process - full stop!
WOW so much crap it isn't funny! So wrong on so many levels, maybe "HE" needs to check his head to see if it's screwed on right!

I wonder if all the Evangelical voters, who think that God picked Trump, like the idea of Trump’s main man paying women to have his babies?
Do they think Musk wants confidentiality agreements because he is treating these women so well.

When they hauled these guys off and withheld their rights and zero due process, they committed the acts of kidnapping.
When they exchanged money with El Salvador for these bodies, they committed human trafficking.
If any of these men die in El Salvador, this administration is an accessory to murder.

what do you mean "almost"? It's pretty clear to me that destruction is their objective.....
A little sarcasm on my part!
Dear Ms. Mace, yes, I believe in the Resurrection. I also believe that Jesus means what he said in Matthew 25. Do you?

Now I didn't go to Yale but it seems like if you want to deport someone for being here illegally you should figure out if they're here illegally.
