I could use the four letter d word to describe Mr. Tuberville but suffice to say that he is the least informed US Senate member. And with this lot that says a lot. Even Ron Johnson is a little more hep.
* Smiles broadly * *Could not be happier that he is running for governor and on the national level we may not have to care about anything he says ever again *
They're not completely analogous. One manifestation of antisemitism is a belief that utopia is around the corner, if only the Jews are eliminated, or at least their influence curtailed. I'm not aware of such a belief existing in relation to Muslims.
It's almost funny that these folks represent a wing of Christianity that with its love of keeping women in line (behind them) and imposing their religion on others that comes closest to what they say they fear in Islam. Not many New Testament folks here.
I mean they are form "shithole countries " which have oil
It's culturally appropriate and fully legal to dismember journalists and kill foreign workers , so don't ever say that Wahabi s don't have some great ideas .
I'm no fan of how the Gaza issue is being handled but I pay far more attention to the US. However, when it comes to anti-semitism, I certainly disapprove.
I don't see opposing Israel's demolition of Gaza as warranted. It makes me angry and sad. That doesn't make me antisemitic, nor does it make the protestors on college campuses antisemitic. those who are blatantly antisemitic are individuals. Fuentes et.al. may be considered more than individuals since they seem to speak with one voice but...
My primary point was that opposing Israel’s disproportionate attacks on Gaza didn’t make one antisemitic. True, Hamas’ massacre in Israel was heinous, but of the tens of thousands of Palestinian people killed women and children in FAR greater numbers than Hamas militants. The massacre in Sydney was unprovoked and clearly antisemitic. I don’t recall saying anything about antisemitism among the left, unless you mean college students are leftist. Harassing Jews on campus is terrible and misses the point. American Jews aren’t killing people in Gaza. Since when did antisemitism invade Australia. A big surprise to me.
Trump and Vance are much more clever than morons like Tuberville and Fine, because Trump and Vance make hateful comments that focus on Somalia and Somalis, and do not make explicitly anti-Islam comments. There's an obvious reason for this: Trump (and Kushner and others in Trump's inner circle) are enriching themselves with Saudi and Qatari $ (and probably $ from Turkey to come) and aren't about to to kill the golden goose. And no doubt Vance wants a piece of that action.
Regarding Somalia, Trump and Vance are NOT clever in that neither realizes there are TWO Somalias. The northern part; the former British Somaliland and now just Somaliland; is relatively peaceful and prosperous. There are different clans there that don't want anything to do with the Islamic militants in and around Mogadishu. Somaliland is not yet recognized by any other nations, but there is a large amount of trade between their ports and Arab countries.
You're missing my point, which is that Trump and Vance avoid explicitly anti-Islamic comments because they want to keep the Saudis, Qataris et al. in their good graces. They may be morons about geography, but they are not morons about grifting.
I got your point. Vance is hypocritical and Trump's dementia-addled brain is so far gone that he's incoherent half the time. Examples include Trump's speech at the UN, his speech to the assembled generals, his speech to the nation earlier this month.
Trump is just a front for the real Deep State, including his grifting relatives, Kevin Roberts & the Heritage Foundation, Leonard Leo and his Federalist society, Alliance Defending Freedom & other far right religious groups, the far right wing news media that is much more than just Fox and Newsmax, Turning Point USA, Nick Fuentes and his "groypers," etc. When the time is right; perhaps in 2026; Trump could be quietly disposed of.
The only pillar in Republican politics higher than hysterical racism and hypocritical bigotry is their projection. Every complaint is a confession, every accusation an admission.
Would Tommy Tupperware like to establish a Christofascist government to oppress people different from him and his ilk? Of course he does. And if anyone would recognize a cult, it's card carrying members of another cult.
“At the time of that speech, Tuberville was pushing a bill to ban Sharia law, a religious philosophy he, Fine, and others believe (or claim to believe) is a tool to usurp the Constitution …”
Hey, their president is doing just fine on that front!
When I was in the army back in the dark ages (1967-71) we had a sargeant who may have been the dumbest human being I ever met. His last name began with an O, so we used to call him the Big Zero. But Tubercle has him by a mile.
And in any case, the most serious religious threat to the United States these days is not Islam, but rather organized right wing Christian Nationalism.
Tuberville knows about cults, as he is a member of the Cult of trump. (Bulwark+ subscribers love YOU, Joe Perticone! I just signed up for Letters from Leo, thanks.)
Has Sharia Law ever been suggested in this country? The only ones I have heard speak of it are Republicans. Also, they are the ones that suggest that we need "strong Christian values".
Tommy Tuberville calling out people as part of "a cult" is rich.
I could use the four letter d word to describe Mr. Tuberville but suffice to say that he is the least informed US Senate member. And with this lot that says a lot. Even Ron Johnson is a little more hep.
II didnt see the Dpart of 4 letter word but I thought of
Dolt
Jerk
Dumb
Goof
Dull
Fool
Mean
MAGA
TT's a man for all definitions defining a lack of true thought. But the fourth one was the word I avoided using.
* Smiles broadly * *Could not be happier that he is running for governor and on the national level we may not have to care about anything he says ever again *
Is the cult in question college football?
Islamophobia and antisemitism are two wings of the same bird of bigotry
I keep trying to imagine a conversation between Randy Fine and Nick Fuentes.
Randy Fine is a strongly pro-Israel Jew. Pretty sure he wouldn’t like Fuentes.
…brings to mind Neil Young plaintively singing 🎶 Danger Bird 🦅
But, but, but…attacking religious freedoms!
They're not completely analogous. One manifestation of antisemitism is a belief that utopia is around the corner, if only the Jews are eliminated, or at least their influence curtailed. I'm not aware of such a belief existing in relation to Muslims.
Thanks for the Substack recs, Joe. Letters from Leo is one of my go-tos.
Merry Christmas to you and your family, and thank you for delivering quality journalism (and writing!) with the Press Pass.
It's almost funny that these folks represent a wing of Christianity that with its love of keeping women in line (behind them) and imposing their religion on others that comes closest to what they say they fear in Islam. Not many New Testament folks here.
They project everything they are: ‘not compatible with the constitution,’ ‘a cult,’
How do they square their bigotry with their cult leaders’ love of terrorism-funding Muslim extremists in Saudi Arabia and the gulf?
Sharia law for thee , but not for me , that how .
I mean they are form "shithole countries " which have oil
It's culturally appropriate and fully legal to dismember journalists and kill foreign workers , so don't ever say that Wahabi s don't have some great ideas .
Once more Muslim Americans are the new Hispanics......who became the new African-Americans.
Actually, I think Muslims have become the new Jews.
Nope, the old Jews are still the old Jews-we're attacked by both the far right and far left.

You can oppose Israel's policies in Gaza without necessarily being antisemitic. But I I find the distinction you seem to be making between "those who are blatantly antisemitic" on the left (and that would include some admittedly small portion of anti-Israel college campus protesters harassing Jews on campus or anti-Israel protesters chanting "where's the Jews?" at the Sydney Opera House https://www.reuters.com/world/australian-police-say-no-evidence-offensive-slogan-pro-palestinian-protest-2024-02-02/#:~:text=Reuters%20Plus-,Australian%20police%20say%20no%20evidence%20of%20offensive%20slogan%20at%20pro,said%20during%20a%20media%20briefing.) as Individuals" and the antisemitism of Fuentes et al. on the right unpersuasive. Both are a collection of "individuals" and both "speak with one voice." And that voice is antisemitism.
My primary point was that opposing Israel’s disproportionate attacks on Gaza didn’t make one antisemitic. Well put.

Interesting information, but Trump and Vance don't really care. And neither does their base. Facts and nuance are hateful to them.

I agree with most of what you're saying but none of it seems germane to this article or my original comment.
I get so annoyed by the both-sidesing of "that's just a reflection of politics". No, the racism of your party is a reflection of your party.
Excellent point on projection. Mad King Darn'old Drumpf of Dementia-Felonia is the high god of that behavior.
Fine and Tuberville are pulling for the American Christian Taliban. Guess they believe Muslims are in the way.
“At the time of that speech, Tuberville was pushing a bill to ban Sharia law, a religious philosophy he, Fine, and others believe (or claim to believe) is a tool to usurp the Constitution …”

My daughter was in the Navy (Navigation Petty Office) and wondered how the ship functioned with so many stupid fellow petty officers.
There were so few female officers around during my time of service that I never had a chance to listen to one.
Tuberville knows about cults, as he is a member of the Cult of trump. (Bulwark+ subscribers love YOU, Joe Perticone! I just signed up for Letters from Leo, thanks.)

It's obvious that the ignoramus, racist Florida Man is not compatible with his own "ideology" that people can talk things out.
