I'd like to give a small shoutout to performative reading and book ownership, at least in the home. Books were a constant in my childhood and have been for my children and grandchildren. There was always a bestseller on my parents' bed stand, I always have one or two books lying around the dining room table ("Pudd'nhead Wilson" right now, thanks to The Bulwark book club), and my granddaughter has been updating me on the details in "The Hate U Give."
When books are all around you and you see people reading, it becomes a part of life - not exotic, not a chore, just something you do and fret no more about than you do about eating or playing with the dog.
