Thank you, Adrian, for your great reporting. Thank you to Senator Padilla, and I'm so sorry for the despicable treatment he experienced. It's just unbelievable. As a fourth generation Californian (now living in Portugal) I am so grateful for Senator Padilla's service and that of Governor Newsom, and Mayor Bass.
Good interview. I’m so impressed with Senator Padilla - thoughtful, reasoned, articulate. This horrific incident will probably provide him with a more prominent national platform and I’m happy to see it.
Sen Padilla was treated with total disrespect and then subjected to lies about his actions. tRUMP and his corrupt administration will do anything to keep the truth from the American people.
On another matter S. A. Smith should shut the F up. It is bad enough to occasionally have to listen to his drizzle on ESPN, but to hear that asshole windbag on politics is just a bridge to far. He should keep his clown show on ESPN, or for that matter nowhere, but his comments on this circumstance and not warranted nor wanted.
What about the FBI and National Guard agents who were escorting Padilla, why didn't they step up to identify the Senator and stop the incident from escalating?
Or did they just help their compatriots shove then wrestle Padilla to the ground?
Dems need to kick it up like 20 notches. After what happened to Sen Padilla, and then the assassination and shooting of the Minnesota legislators and their spouses, this is a call to action if there ever was one. From here on out, all Dem leaders must express anger, outrage and resistance activities at every public opportunity. Gov Newsom set the tone this week in his interviews annd address following Judge Bryer’s decision to return control the Nat Guard rightly to the Governor. Our Dem leaders must show more strength and resistance.
Increasing violence (actual and via DoJ) against Democratic public servants. Now someone has killed two people in Mn one of whom was a state rep and the other was a state Senator who was injured. This operation was clearly planned far in advance because the shooter wore a police uniform and had what looked like a police vehicle. This is a huge escalation in the level of violence but it follows what authoritarian regimes do, or encourage their followers to do by their extreme rhetoric.
Thanks to Senator Padilla for standing up, asking questions and demonstrating what courage looks like. 👏 I am so tired of having to rescue the country from this MAGA mob. The Rs wreck the economy and bleet about victimized, then they obstruct and delay the remedies when the people vote for Ds. It's time for Ds to reject these tactics and stand for positive freedom TO be safe, be healthy, to speak and to assemble for the principles that underlie the social contract that underlie our nearly 250 years as a nation of free people who are working to create a more perfect union.
Everyone be safe today. Remember LEOs (law enforcement officers) exist to protect the property of the ruling class, not the people.

The stupidity and futility of these raids is illustrated by a KTLA news report yesterday about Noem attending a raid in Huntington Park. The pregnant mom and 4 kids, citizens, are detained outside as camera's record the ICE Agents, dressed like Seal Team Six wondering through the house looking for the undocumented Dad who wasn't there. Turns out they had his name wrong on the Warrant. His name is George Garcia, the Warrant said David Garcia, but hey, the all look the same anyway right? The resources being expended on this is ridiculous
Another photo op for the Sec'y. You're right about the cost spent on these cruel and sometimes stupid stunts. "Goin' after a criminal! Opps, never mind" costs $$$.
This may have been answered elsewhere but I do not understand why the detail (FBI and National Guard, I think) assigned to Senator Padilla did not step in when the hassling began? Thank you Adrian and Senator for the interview.
He likely does not have a security detail, security when outside of the Capitol.
There are several pieces on this - this link is from 2019 - but it does beg many questions.
Padilla couldn't have entered the Federal Building without screening (they knew who he was) nor admitted to the Noem propaganda presentation with a security screen.
He works in the Federal Building while in CA, from all reports. Why would he have needed a security detail to go into a room in the building that he already has clearance to access?
And then... his security detail would have gotten into an altercation with Noem's security (goon squad).
This is what the Senator said just a few minutes in... "I was in the building for a scheduled meeting with members of Northern Command to get more information... I mentioned it's a Federal building right so upon arrival, even I as a senator go through security screening, as does my staff. There is a National Guards member, there is an FBI agent assigned to escort me. I can't move freely about the building, I have to be escorted. So they are sitting in the conference room with me, waiting..."
Fiona - I've gone back and listened and can only find the "there is an FBI agent assigned to escort me" - which isn't quite a personal security detail, that's one person making sure he "doesn't wander"
In any case, so many questions remain.
Noem continues to lie about this and the media is spinning along suggesting that Padilla was 'wrong' because he "interrupted" her.
The Senator mentioned at the beginning of the interview that he was given a detail as he wouldn't be able to wander around the building alone. Unless I misheard.
What was the last part of the question about the 6 criminals she's rotating?
What was the last part of the question about the 6 criminals she's rotating?
Noem announces that they’re not leaving until they “LIBERATE “ California of the burdensome leader, leadership and socialism
So they want to liberate California from their duly ELECTED officials!
They really are into trying to overturn elections and going against the will of the people

This was a great interview Adrian. You are a wonderful addition to the the Bulwark staff.

They knew exactly who you were Senator and they were waiting for an excuse. Thank you for your bravery.

None of it makes sense.

I was wondering the same thing!
