Is Survivor really amazing? I’ve managed to never pay a moment’s attention to whatever Survivor is, except for the intro of this podcast; and plan to never spend another moment pondering Survivor. Wish me luck!

To see how bad educated people can be for a liberal society, just look to any repressive society, including Nazi Germany, and you will see educated people support the authoritarian because they are rewarded for their support materially. Education doesn't make for a good person.

Sarah keeps harping on the Democrats having the obligation to sell their message to the voters. But how can Sarah tell the difference between a lack of supply and a lack of demand?

Look at all the voters that hate "Obamacare" but love their local ACA by another name.

Good show. I remember being stunned by the first few seasons of survivor, the game play was so intense and fluid and unpredictable. It gave me alot of anxiety watching it too!

Hitler came to power in 1933, NOT 1931 !In 1931, the Nazi Party was winning large numbers of seats in the Reichstag, but never a majority!

The mass killings did not begin until 1939 (Poland).

We are well beyond 1931. It's like July 1933 now, SCOTUS' immunity decision last summer functioning as Trump's Enabling Act.

Good discussion. I'm with JVL on this one but I do appreciate Sarah's optimism.

JVL, the problem with the morality debate is that, at least with the pro-Trump people whom I know, they see themselves as being absolutely on the moral side and the left being grotesquely immoral.

They see the right as wanting the U.S. to be clean and safe like Europe, while the left is trying to make the U.S. more like a Zimbabwe or Mexico ( in terms of the left supporting weak law enforcement, welfare which they feel serves as an enabler to illegitimate births, and immigration and its effect on the country’s demographics ).

They (Trump supporters that I know) definitely see themselves as being on the side of morality and civilization and they reject entirely the premise that favoring racial segregation is somehow immoral. They see themselves as being on the side of civilization and therefore being morally correct.

The same applies to LGBT equal rights. They see themselves as being on the side of the church and of civilization itself.

They feel that same-gender relationships should be unseen and never spoken of and that people on the left pushing that issue are ruining civilization.

They don’t necessarily want LGBT people to be mistreated ( that would be uncivilized…), but they don’t approve of society doing anything to imply acceptance of something that they feel is better hidden, never discussed, and seen as rare.

When I raise the concern that we are in 1931 Germany, with our freedom at imminent risk), I can tell that while they dislike the violence that occurred in Germany, they have a certain admiration for Germans at that time because at least they stood up for civilizational standards (except for those unpleasant concentration camps…smh).

How do you have a discussion with someone like this whose premise of right and wrong is so different? You can’t.

M M (Lee): was fascinated by your observations above. I'm guessing that the people you've been talking to are not your typical ignorant, red hat MAGA types but, maybe, more like National Review readers who might dislike the more obvious crudities/absurdities of Trump but believe he's basically right on the main issues and so support him. The blindness of these people truly rivals the "good"

Germans in 1931 your acquaintances profess admiration for. Like you, smh.

To me, a "low-information voter" is someone who votes for the person who says "I'll lower your food prices", exactly what Sarah says drew them to Trump. If you believe that the President can do that, you're low info in my view.

Sarah, what are you talking about? Republicans don't want lower prices, they may say that, but what they mean is we don't want brown, black, women taking our good jobs. Period! Prices are higher since Trump and they think he's great because the Black head of the Joints Chiefs of Staff was fired and mediocre white man replaced him.

The Biden Administration brought the US thru the COVID depression into the most successful economy among developed countries. He was not a failure. I didn't want Harris, but, wtf, Trump? The only reason was Trump was a white man and Harris a brown woman. NOT the economy. The economy is worse NOW. But they still support Trump.

Yes, mass migration is bad. Americans hate it, but they also hate paying higher prices for produce, for restaurant meals, for landscaping, and street cleaning and garbage pick up. You can have no illegal immigration and then Democratic, union paid unskilled labor. Then you'd hear more screaming then now. So what do YOU want. Cheap labor or no sad, poor illegal immigrant labor.

Do they really think anyone who votes Democratic gives a flying fork about their ruining the country and voting for Trump in order to "own" other people?

I gotta say that I am really with JVL on what electing Trump in 2024 says about American society. I'm Canadian and the first time I could see Trump's "values" and "tough guy" qualities in American shows like I hadn't before, even old shows. It became very irritating to watch Gibbs bullying someone on NCIS, even though I absolutely love Gibbs! When Americans choose the felon again it became nearly impossible to watch some things. There are so many American "values" that just annoy the rest of the world. Be proud of your country, but why are New Yorkers so very proud to be some of the rudest people on Earth? Why is that a virtue that seems to be striven for? I love many Americans, but the world has always kinda brushed off how rude some of the culture is and I thought you were better than that.

I want to see Sara do a deep dive into how this bombardment of propaganda plays a role and how big of a role does it play? Because we know to be true most of these voters are working off of false points of views and regurgitating others propaganda.

sara, how is it possible to 'persuade' stupidity? the answer is either by physical force or by magic. this has always been true. americans voters are stupid and ignorant, the reason we have escaped as a nation has been that the honor of holding public office provided enough incentive for enough politicians to move forward toward madisonian principles. today, the financial benefits available to officeholders and to rightwing media have exposed the intellectual rot that underlies our culture

I have always thought that Sarah is too generous deflecting blame away from the MAGA crowd for not knowing better (it has been 10 years after all!) and think that Bonhoeffer's theory of Stupidity vs Evil applies. (Spoiler alert, Stupidity is worse). https://sproutsschools.com/bonhoeffers-theory-of-stupidity/
