Does Trump's effort to be "Salesman in Chief" for major American companies leave you just a little queasy, or is it just me? He may "claim" the reduced cost is due to him and his special negotiating skills. Two points: These promotions are planned months in advance. The Donald had nothing to do with it, except claiming undue acclamation. Considering his current mental state he probably believes he actually did it!

Thanks for giving us this easy-to-understand economic lowdown every week. Love this newsletter!

I saw yesterday that Fox 'News' was using its megaphone to cheer on Trump's Very Strong push on behalf of consumers, bragging that he's attacking inflation. Umm, inflation was under 3% in 2024 and is now over 4%. In Foxworld, facts are whatever you say they are, as long as you repeat them obsessively.

Trump and Walmart. A match made in heaven. Here's your quarterly reminder that Walmart consistently pays its emoloyees so poorly that they have among the highest rate of employees on snap and medicaid benefits of any American corporation. So you're really just subsidizing Walmart low prices with your tax dollars.

Not anymore! Now, they can starve like the rest of the takers and whiners. One Big Beautiful Bill indeed.

He is such an asshole. I must digress... a few yrs ago, i had the opportunity to visit the Lake Powell.. whatever that is. The lake is so low it is nearing deadpool. boy, that would be bad. if everyone just ate a non meat dish one day a week, it would give scientists and policy makers a chance to try and see how we could fix this nightmare because it would reduce our water usage to produce feed for cattle. Asking Americans to not eat meat on 1 day /week is akin to asking them to sign up for the Communist party, so we are screwed.

I am so happy that Walmart, Costco... whatever are lowering prices. We could look at a bigger picture here. Cattle production uses MUCH more water than data centers (I am leery of them , as well) if we are concerned about prices, about the environment, about the economy we need to be looking at where our resources are going. Trump, the asshole, stands up and proclaims he lowered prices on beef, woohoo! We need real solutions to problems which require deep analysis. oh, crap! DOGE got rid of all the scientists!

Trumpenumbra:

The phenomenon of a large corporation doing whatever it already intended to do, but crediting its decision to the President.

Unfortunately , all this makes me feel sick

I just switched from Amazon to Walmart for delivery because of Bezos so this story made me wonder why. I live in a rural area. Our closest Costco is a 3 hour round trip, but it’s one I’m willing to make more often. As always, thanks for your reporting.

The narcissist, needs everything to be about him. His biggest heartache from his first term, was not the election, but everyone forgot about him very quickly. This time if he marks enough of his territory, maybe we will remember him.

They're also starting to take credit for legislation that may never pass and misrepresenting it as law.

Come on Catherine, give the old, rich, mentally declining white dude a break! He's probably never shopped for "groceries" (you'll remember he invented that word!) I expect he's never been in a grocery store unless it was for a photo-op. So how in the world would he know about "sales?" He probably invented that catchy word too, to describe this phenomenon he just encountered for lowering prices.

This is the same guy that took credit for other people's good deeds and donations and snuck off with the award meant for that person to a round of applause.

FareDaze - such a man of the people, he's really quite up on shopping requirements: "You go to a grocery store, you have to give ID" - https://www.cnn.com/2025/11/05/politics/fact-check-trump-groceries-identification

FareDaze62's avatar

Yeah, I remember that one. I mean, what could a banana cost? $10?

According to a sign taped to my apartment door, Donald Trump lowered prices of Chinese food by 20% on Tuesdays when I pay in cash.

I'm most impressed by him lowering prescription drug prices 400-600%. No other president has accomplished that.

Costco is an amazing company. Thanks Catherine for saying it like it is.

Christopher Wood's avatar

Sadly, there is no Costco, which I belonged to in Boston.

Now, in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, population of almost 200,000 including 50,000+ students at Purdue University.

Seems like a prime territory for a store. 😪

This Democrat loves Costco. I’ve been a member since before it was Costco.

A Price Club member in the house? :)

Deborah L. Hall's avatar

Indeed! Price Club became Price Costco, then just Costco.

I did an inventory observation when they were an audit client. Saturday night midnight shift but they had the nicest people working and so very organized. They also fed me while I was there.

It’s a great company. They treat their employees right, and their customers, too. I just read something about a 40 year employee who has saved a million dollars working there.

This new version will also exclude brown M&M’s because, it turns out, brown M&M's were a DEI M&M. And no, Catherine, Skittles are too Pride Flag adjacent. Mars would never have two Pride offerings. There will be no purple M&M's!!

Unfortunately, many of Trump's supporters are not familiar with retailing tactics

Seek's avatar

Ohhh, let’s not start listing things iDJT’s supporters aren’t familiar with. That will be a Herculean task and I’m not up for that on a Friday evening.

Or anything else for that matter, if it doesn't come directly from Trump. Lol!
