Why are all these people so shocked? I get that former Republicans— who used to seem unshockable—are shocked. And people who are too young to remembered waterboarding at Guantanamo. I got my shocks in the 60s. I’m waiting for a follow up call from Paul Krassner’s ghost, about how Abbie says it’s time for all of us to go underground.
Here is something that has been on my mind. How is the rendition of people (even if they were convicted of something) not "cruel and unusual punishment?"
What an amazing spectacle! The POS who thinks he can do anything and everything he wants is unable to tell the president of a two-bit country he couldn't find on a map that he has to return a man sent there by accident. And that president also is completely, despite having the supreme authority in that country, unable to tell his subordinates to put that man, a green card holder, on a plane to the US.
Forget all the other arguments. Start spreading the word that POS has NO POWER to do anything, so why should anyone do anything for him. Maybe the country should believe it and get rid of the no power nonentity squatting in the White House.
Back in the middle 90s, I was going to seminary. One Saturday afternoon, I joined in a protest against El Salvador and their infamous practice of disappearing people. Mothers would go to the enormous dump site to see if they could find any bodies or parts of bodies of their loved ones. And now we have Antichrist Trump who takes such great delight, including his cabinet; namely Bible-thumping Little Marco, laughing at the possibility of Terrorist Trump having five more prisons built by the President of El Salvador. I’m so damn ashamed of being an American right now.
Frightening, infuriating, yes, but that's where we are now, until the people of this country rise up, as I have to believe they will. Instead of fear, let them see our conviction and resolve to stop the immoral and illegal inhumanity of this Mt. Rushmore of crooks and philanderers, and that we will fight, first with the help of the courts - not just for our rights, but for those who cannot help themselves. Strength is the only language a bully understands.
The potential saving grace is that as we are pushed outside of the bedrock of our democracy the opposition to the takeover of fascism grows ever stronger, and leaderlessly, as a body without a head, thanks to the internet we could have an uprising with no blood. MySubstack today deals with that:
There's action in the playing field and I am getting in step
Shock, disbelief, horror, deliberate public terrorism. These words are becoming numbing and almost normal.
When are our elected officials going to stand up in the house and senate and "do an Al Green" non-stop, 24/7 day after day, week after week? Make sure they're on C-Span. Or are these just milk-toast moments showing the rest of us that this is just how it's going to be?
"Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) said that the Trump and Bukele spectacle left him, like most Americans, 'recoiling in horror.'"
Sadly, most Americans were NOT "recoiling in horror". They are unable or unwilling to contextualize these actions as having some kind of meaningful impact on their daily lives. Netflix still works. Grocery stores still have food, even if it's more expensive than they want. Trump is DOING THINGS! Yeah, tariffs suck, but millions of our fellow Americans really want to be turning little screws. They don't see how the MAGA America impacts them...YET.
I was going to write a similar comment. Perhaps a little more than 50% of American's "disapprove" of Trump's moves, but they certainly aren't "recoiling in horror". To those in the cult, it's OK because Trump has reframed the issue as throwing "the bad guys" out instead of the real issue of denial of due process. And besides, they don't care what Trump does because he's always right. And too many other people are too comfortable and just comfort themselves that Trump would never do that to them.

We should all be VERY afraid-especially journalists, so I salute your bravery.
if dictator don is powerless to get Abrego Garcias returned then trump is an impotent dictator

UNCLE SCAM MUSK GO!

there trump sits with his only ally.
but he has a herd of collaborators, Musk, Zuckerberg, Bezos, Cook and now Maher
That’s what a friend told me today: We jettisoned our closest allies, Mexico, Canada, Ukraine, Germany etc. For what? El Salvador, Russia?

Bukele/El Salvador gets paid per prisoner. So his incentives are aligned with Trump’s agenda. The more the merrier, innocent or not.
Who says globalization is dead! El Salvador, gulag to the world. They have found their competitive advantage on the world stage.

Senator Van Hollen is going to El Salvador....Thank him for taking this first real action.
Ask your Representatives to go too...
We can all wear signs or carry posters that proclaim:
I AM ABREGO GARCIA
A more accurate title of your article would be “There Are More Kilmar… “
How many triggers for impeachment do they need?
