This was my second Evening with the Bulwark in DC. They always deliver. Had a great time. Afterward I was able to have a very interesting and informative conversation with both Will and Mona. I leave smarter and love it.

Question for Sarah about door knockers and young Dems. How much does knocking on doors really work in today’s polarized climate? Analysts like David Shore indicate the impact has dwindled.

Mona is right in that given the horrendous attack on 10/7 Israel had no choice but to crush Hamas. My fear is that it is not possible. Then what?

It reminds me of the French experience in Algeria as depicted in the movie The Battle of Algiers although that war was farther ranging and more difficult than this has become so far. It almost led to a military coup against the French government and led to terror attacks on French citizens in both France and Algeria by a disaffected French military group the OAS.

The French eventually withdrew. Israel doesn't have that option.

It's possible to agree completely that Israel has no choice other than to eliminate Hamas and still be shocked and horrified by the number of civilians killed. I realize that we are in the fog of war and won't be able to corrorborate the numbers from the Gaza Health Ministry for some time but understand that they have been generally proven to align with UN and Israeli figures. Have 13,000 collateral deaths really been necessary to achieve what the Israeli army has to date?

War is an abomination regardless of any justification. That's all I can say.

Mona cannot simply wish Netanyahu out of this awful picture. He has wanted to be seen as a warmonger & not a peacemaker.

Young people have not read Exodus. Israeli voters have squandered the high ground with 20 yrs. of Bibi.

Netanyahu doesn’t help but the issue is older than him. I would love to see truly new ideas on how to solve it. It seems like the same old stuff warmed up again and again, a cycle without end.

The issue is older than dirt!

It is the cycle without end. How many American presidents (even Trump) have really truly tried. But at some point people just start to give up in believing that "Peace in the Middle East" is ever a possibility. I hope we are not at that point.

I don’t think it’s possible unless both sides are willing to shrug off the extreme religious and political voices that hurt prospects of compromise. As we know in the U.S., a passionate, vocal and emboldened minority can run roughshod over those posing rational solutions.
