Just watched this. Seen none of the other films.

I saw it in an Odeon Luxe, which means you get a great screen and sound system, and a v comfortable chair. I think under those conditions it is watchable. Just about. At least the CGI wasn’t drek, on that screen it was a nice film to look at.

This franchise has a weird place in my heart. Tron & Tron: Legacy are not good movies, and yet I kinda love em both? I’m honestly kinda reassured that they seem to be 3 for 3 in that regard.

I think there is deeper meaning to these movies than you intimate Sonny.

Tron: these new fangled computers are fun, colorful, and are full of potential. We should use them to make information free! Go users!

Tron Legacy: the digital landscape is darker than we thought…it sucks parents into devices and away from their kids…there is potential for harm and we should beware of facists lurking. When something unique and creative happens, protect it. And maybe get off your screens and out into the real world!

So I’m curious if Ares now represents how damaging the digital world (social media) is and how its binary absolutism has leaked out and is creating havoc and we should beware, or even oppose, the tech oligarchy?

Ha, stay tuned for my newsletter, I think I'm going to use the Trons to return to a topic kinda-sorta addressed here: https://www.thebulwark.com/p/red-rooms-and-the-webs-intrusive

(Maybe not, who can say.)

I see it progressing further down the AI route than social media. Although it would be kind of hilarious if instead of having a 30 minute life, the character had a 30 second attention span, and just continuously scrolled.

Tron was hella bad. But throw in the Red Dawn VHS tape and I'll take it off your hands

I love Tron, I've always loved Tron. Going to watch this feels like going to watch The Rise of Skywalker - I have almost negative interest. Mostly because it has Jared Leto doing the sort of thing he's been doing a lot. I've heard podcasts and people talking about how he's the villain of the piece, which I never understood - yes, he's red, but I thought the trailer made a case of how he is probably the protagonist looking to survive, and teaming up with white programs?

Either way, the only thing I could think of when watching the recognizer on the streets was the movie Pixels. The trailer for that with Space Invaders on the street. The reverse Isekai idea is solid, and has been done well in anime, but taking all the possibility and newness of a magical environment like Tron and bringing it out onto the same old human world - it could be good, but I can't imagine if they're going for action set-pieces, that they go wild enough with it.

Either way, it has Jared Leto, and unless I heard a review that was overwhelmingly positive, my mind goes to Suicide Squad, and Morbius and... no thanks.

Is it okay for kids? My kids can roll with Avatar in the theater. I haven't shown them Guardians of the Galaxy Vol III yet. So anything in that range is good to go.

I think it’s probably fine.

Your description of the concept reminds me what made Last Action Hero so fun. Is funny to consider it is basically the same thing, just change movies for games.

Yeah, this movie is kind of like that in that it does BOTH the pulling in and bringing out, etc. And I'm one of the few LAH die-hards out there. But this just doesn't have the same draw.
