It just occurred to me that even sans troops in our own small communities (yet) that we are now living in a dictator-occupied country. We are simply being consumed by the fascist within rather than by an enemy nation. I am utterly unprepared for such a sudden change in circumstances, and I am terrified.
Thank you thank you thank you for this incredibly important piece. It's a shame that legacy media isn't doing this kind of reporting. And let's not forget dems who keep saying this is all a distraction or stunt; tell that to the folks here in the piece. I don't understand why they can't make these connections between Trump's increasing authoritarian moves and the effect on the economy. The Bulwark, WIRED and Rolling Stone are stand out orgs right now for tackling what's happening in/to our country.
Of course Trump doesn’t eat out in Washington area restaurants! He wouldn’t be allowed to throw his food against the walls and on the floor like he can in the White House dining room every time he throws a tantrum!
As a resident of the DC metro area, this is a flagrant lie. I was in China Town earlier this year, (had a really good time with collegues at Jaleo's, Chef Andres restaurant) and people weren't afraid to go into DC to eat at restaurants. The city had begun to bounce back from the closures due to Covid. NOW, I'm hesitant to go go out since the American Gestapo is patrolling the streets, harrasssing, stopping, and randomely searching people. It's having a chilling affect on restaurants and other tourism.
Trump needs Marc Burnett to create the script and story lines for his apprentice to succeed. Trump can only spend more than he has and sell smoke and mirrors. His “business acumen “ is a lie!!
Contrary to Pres. bragging: ".... OpenTable shows restaurant reservations down 24 percent from last year’s Restaurant Week, the New York Times reported."
I’m sure that all those people who spoke to Felon Trump had tears in their eyes and started out the conversation with, “ Sir….” This from the man who said the seven European leaders who met with him last week told him they represented 38 countries and they considered DonOld President of Europe!
I work downtown and since Covid bars and restaurants I pass each day or go to have been busy. I guess he can say these things because he’s talking to Joe Smith in Anytown, KS who may never see DC or NY. Trump can paint whatever picture because he’s not talking to people who live in the DMV. The people he’s talking to just buy what he sells them.
No worries, once the T. Rump criminal enterprise takes over the Fed restaurants will be overtaken by soup kitchens. Anyone else remember October, 1929?
1) Doubling the cops via nat. guards could have been done as easily, maybe better, by adding to the DC force directly. More eyes, more reports.
(2) MORE IMPORTANT--Crime already down before the Nat guard sent in, so this is third year down? (Age groups in covid years are now accordingly older, and sociology 101 says certain age groups sufficiently young are crime-prone, then "grow out of it". Think same thing happened as baby boomers went into and then past the crime-prone ages.
3) D.A.R.E. cops, My kids remember them fondly, friendly additions to schools intended to reduce drug use, but side effect of making kids like and respect the very friendly cops. It turned out they had no effect on drug use, but the RESPECT FOR FRIENDLY POLICE was real
4) Why are more southern states the ones sending guards? is the civil war not over?
(1) Some DC people say If they REALLY want to do some crime-chasing, "they" should ditch the safe mall spots and get their "royal-highness behinds" down to Anacostia, as that area has bad spots. (2) Cities have "bad spot" problems that grow with size. The problem is "anonymity", according to an urban sociologist my spouse knew about.
How so? In a small town, if someone grabs something, everybody tells the cop "It was so-and-so". They give name, description, relatives and address, as "everybody knows everybody", zero anonymity. That's impossible in a big city with people mobile. People barely know who is on their apartment floor, given a building's occupants keep changing. Neighbors are anonymous, not well-known, can't be reported for wrong-doing.
(3) Rec and activity centers. People we know in DC say there are sizeable centers set up for basketball and swimming, etc, but hardly anyone goes. They think the centers could be a solution if used better.
Not clear why the centers not used? Parents don't want their kids to go, as media drums up fear? OR.. With parents not home, away to work, often two jobs, so gone many hours,, the kids do not stay inside, but are out and about. They get into trouble the parents do not know about?
Will the people they grab get pardons like the Jan 6 crowd did, no matter how violent, no matter how long their criminal history?
Talked to someone who recently re-visited the wonderful Zoo, as the Chinese have sent their beloved Panda Bears back. These visitors thought the zoo crowd was thin compared to prior years, little biz for the food stations. (Tariff effect? National Guard effect? Either way, tourists STAYING AWAY!)
These visitors say they've routinely ridden the metro, always felt safe. The crime complaint they hear about being youths not paying for tickets and jumping over turnstiles. That said, they've heard about it, never seen it.
Someone they know occasionally eats lunch at whatever Metro train-changing spot Vance and Hegseth recently stole for their photo opp. The spot was apparently closed off, so "no lunch that day, sorry"!
Thank you, Mr. Carrasquillo.
Sounds like all trumps friends can now go out in DC because the "regulars" are staying home. No one to boo them when they walk in now...

Yay for Chef Andres. He's the greatest. I give to his WCK every time there is a disaster. I've not had the pleasure of dining in his DC restaurant.

Also impacting Airbnb bookings. Airbnb has so far declined to come out and say what the data shows.

I don't think the Confederacy ever really gave up.
As always, the sequel is loider and stupider!

No one can "jump over" the turnstiles now. It's been a while since you've ridden the metro.
Sorry, Figure of speech. The gate thingies
