So appreciate your article, for reporting what has and is happening in MInnesota. We need people to understand, to know it’s not over. And you are helping in this effort. It was great to come to your show as well. Thanks for all you all are doing!
I live in Minneapolis in a part that's relatively ICE-free. JVL learned more about my city in 3 days that I have during the entire siege-not just from gathering facts, but in giving them a context. I know more than I did about where I live, including knowing that I haven't done enough to help (and that I really ought to get out more).
Minnesota has created a model of how to resist and care for each other that needs to be pfolplowed by other citieso ul6nder psiege. They have been nothing short of amazing, exemplars of civic virtue and organizing, however loosely, at the community level. They see something, and they take action, coming up with a plan to make sure it doesn't happen again.
There is so much to be moved by, but for me, I am especially moved by the volunteers who are outside the detention facility 24/7, providing warm cars, food, transportation, coats, and other warm clothing. They are saving these traumatized people's lives, using kindness to counter hatred at the most basic level.
I don't know if it's done, but if you ask me, the citizens of the Twin Cities ought to be nominated for the next Nobel Peace Prize. Not only do they deserve it, but I can't think of anything that would would send Chump into a full-blown melt down. Call it the perks of being kind.
JVL, I have shared this on Facebook and LinkedIn with messages urging my friends, contacts and colleagues to read your words. This is one of the most important things you have ever written. Thank you for being the stalwart observer that we need!
The issue of ICE taking photos of non detained observers for a database has not made its way through the courts to determine its legality. It will very likely be brought up in the future - that will be an interesting ruling to watch for.
Thanks you so much for keeping the focus on Minneapolis. We absolutely need to keep talking about what ICE is doing there and in other major cities. The harassment hasn't stopped, and Homeland Security is ramping up the purchase and re-tooling of warehouses to "process" people. It seems the media can't keep up with all of the insanity coming out of the White House. The other two issues that we need to keep the focus on are the war in Ukraine and getting justice for the survivors of Epstein and his cronies (including you know who).
Thank you for documenting how this is playing out. I know I complain about JVL constantly doomcasting, but this isn't that. It's not great, but by not wallowing in it, there is still hope for change. I just don't want to lose sight of that. At least not yet.
I went to the Free University in West Berlin in 1984. I saw first hand the result of Putin and the Stasi policies. I was only 19, but I was (an obvious American, I had likely been followed for weeks) picked up one night on my way back West from seeing a play in the East. They made sure I was fully terrorized. I have a story about every one of the 12 hours I was in Stasi custody. Trump & Co have the Master as their teacher - and Putin is getting his revenge on us all for the fall of the Berlin Wall. Looks like he’s getting it…..
In Bulgaria the Communists forcibly renamed and expelled ethnic Turks in the 80s. They called it the Renewal Process. It's better that we don't have language for this because it would be similarly Orwellian.
Thank you so much, JVL. It's hard to think of something to say other than thank you. So many people have insisted that Minnesota is no longer under threat despite the reality.
On the endlessly infuriating topic of why some people have to be punched in the face by something before they can realize it is evil and wrong: This N.J. Trump voter’s husband was detained by ICE: ‘I thought they’d focus on criminals.’
Leaving a link to a piece I just wrote on life in Minnesota. Tagged this article JVL. Thanks again for coming to MN!

Agreed!
Thank you for this. I wish I didn't have to thank you for this.
Amen….

This is one of your best.
