This is absolutely terrifying, and something that hadn't occurred to me at all.

"When we’ve critiqued Trump’s plan to make the federal government run on tariffs in the past, we’ve mostly focused on his cockamamie economic thinking.¹ But a massive across-the-board increase of federal tariffs would also mean a massive increase in the president’s discretionary control over various parts of the economy through the distribution of waivers and exclusions."

Same. He has ready a staff that knows how to do vengeance, not just talk about it, and the big money guys are scurrying for cover. Is Mark Cuban the only billionaire with courage? My respect for him has soared, and Harris should appoint him to that new department of efficiency.

Can you imagine what will occur in just one area of the economy, our stock market? Any mega-corp's future prospects will depend entirely on the whims of the most unstable impulsive man on the planet. The only rational choice for any investor is to immediately sit on the sidelines until the dust settles and trump's personal picks are clear. So much for this long-time Republican crap about free markets being the guiding principle of the ultra-rich. It was favoritism and inside information all along.

I initially thought tariffs were playing the same role that Mexico-will-pay-for-the-wall played in 2016 - a way for Trump to act like a strongman taking money from foreigners. Now I see it as part of the retribution project.

Tariffs take money away from American citizens, not foreigners.

Of course. But that's not how Trump sells them.

And the Harris Campaign has not figured out how to get that across to the voters.
