Once again, the problem is not only what the Trump administration is doing, but what it is leaving undone.

I find it hard to believe that the campus protests were all organic manifestations of the indignation of college students over the use (or mis-use) of our tax dollars in support Israel in its war against Hamas. I’m sure that many protesters were college students and most were sincere, but these protests seemed less calibrated to shift public opinion over the war in Gaza and Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, and more calibrated to hurt Biden’s reelection prospects. They were organized over Telegram, and they took on an almost homogeneous quality that seems anything but accidental.

I would actually like to know if Khalil or anyone else was coordinating with Iran or Russia. If Khalil could be shown conclusively to have meaningfully supported Hamas/Hezbollah/Iran (where “meaningfully” means more than just “verbally sympathetic to”) then actually he should be deported. In doing so, the administration should have to follow due process in making claims, and producing evidence in court, etc, etc.

But that’s not what the administration is doing. Which means that this is about trial ballooning the unlawful disappearing of an unpopular figure and NOT about figuring out whether Russian or Iranian propagandists and resources are underpinning some disruptive domestic movements in this country.
