I read almost three chapters of Terry Teachout's "Pops" because it was a legal holiday and the paper was not going to be delivered. I had saved Jewish Review of Books to read before lunch but was too eager to know what was going to happen now. (I think the first Hot Five sessions were in the first chapter today.)
I live in Florida and yes, the Villages has quite the reputation here in the state. The video gave me a good chuckle, thank Phil for that. Also the hot dog article was the best. I do love a good hot dog. Happy 4th Jim.
I was going to make a cynical or humorous comment, but after reading Carl Lincoln's inspiring one, I'm going to simply say, Thank you, and may we all know better times to come.
The movie moments that sum it up for me may not be terribly reassuring, but they're the best expression of how I feel about standing and fighting for our democracy in the time of Trump. Both moments come near the end of Three Days Of The Condor.
The first comes when the assassin Joubert, played by Max Von Sydow, suggests that Robert Redford's character, Joe Turner, would be safest if he became an expatriate (and, Joubert hints, a professional assassin like Joubert himself).
Turner responds, "I was born in the United States, Joubert. I miss it when I'm away too long."
The second comes when Turner reveals to his CIA superior, Director Higgins (played with beautifully corn-fed villainy by Cliff Robertson) that he has sent the whole story to the New York Times; that he has blown the lid off the murderous government conspiracy.
Higgins says, "How do you know they'll print it? You can take a walk. But how far if they don't print it?"
Turner says, "They'll print it."
Higgins says, "How do you know?"
Turner has no answer. He doesn't know. There is no certainty. But he's made his choice. He turns and walks away.
I am part of pediatric heart surgery team that will do a heart transplant for a child later this afternoon.
I am grateful to live in a country that has the privilege of technology and expertise to give the gift of life.
A child born in some other countries would never have this second chance at life, and I am honored to be a part of this day for our patient and the family.
Trump and his coterie of deplorable’s keep talking about immigrant rapists and how they are destroying the fabric of this country with crime. Yet, we have a convicted sex trafficker who is currently living the high life at Club Fed (Ghlaine Maxwell).
Additionally, we have an administration that refuses to indict any rapists associated with Epstein, and a president that continues to give pardons to rapists (Tate brothers), drug dealers (pres of Honduras), and to any white criminal who has $2 million sitting around. Not to mention, he is most likely a rapist himself—credibly accused and found guilty by a civil jury, and a traitor to boot!
Bottom line, so much for the far right actually caring about rape—it’s all about The Great Replacement Theory and destroying the EU and NATO—no different than the election being about Hunter’s graft, the price of gas or eggs.
These are mere distractions—Trump, Musk and the far right want to destroy the EU and NATO; immigration is the excuse. And the reason they needed to fire Army General Christopher Donahue—he was too good at his job—the goal is to help Russia, and bring Europe to its knees.
A divided Europe is easy pickings for the oligarchs and Trump. The same way they have divided this nation, and destroyed our institutions, democracy and the rule of law. IMHO…:)
In addition to Ghislainr Maxwell, teo of Trump 's son, Don Jr. and Barron hsve associated with Andrew Tate, a notorious misogynist and exploiter of women for his personal enrichment.
I am leading a bike ride with three other brave souls willing to tackle the current heat emergency for a 15 mile journey that will take us through one of the crown jewels of Cincinnati's park system - Ault Park. Water infused with electrolytes at the ready.
I plan to come home and take a nap, keep the shades down and hibernate until this hell on earth of a weather system subsides. Maybe dream about being on the shores of Lake Superior on the far western edges of the Upper Peninsula.
This morning I was laying in bed listening to the radio and heard a snippet of Trump's prepared remarks at Mount Rushmore. In it he first praised the US and its Constitution before praising himself. My immediate thought was, 'What have they done with Donald?"
He also launched into the Communist Menace schtick which it's clear will be the "Immigrant Invasion" of this mid-term election. Actually, it's a hybrid: the immigrants are now communists.
The immigrant invasion was very likely a political dirty trick, the work of Roger Stone and/or Putin's GRU. Similarly, I smell a rat in this latest news that the "progressive agenda" is now on steroids.
I can't tell you how many otherwise normal people I've talked to who admit they voted for Trump but who insist they had to, even though they don;t like him, to save the country from Biden and Harris replacing them with POC.
Thank you Team Bulwark for contributing all these thoughtful posts this week.

"Pops" was the ordinary book for June for the Rhythm & Books book club at the public library.
Some Jewish publications like Sources and Tradition had whole issues dedicated to the 250th but Jewish Review of Books chose not to.

Happy Fourth of July from Canada!

Standing up with the truth for democracy, thanks
Thanks Jim for the work you do everyday. I wish you a very happy July 4th.

Happy Fouth, People. Never forget, America is STILL the greatest country in the world!
Out of curiosity Jim, when are we getting you and DJ Brynes on a podcast to talk Ohio politics?
