I was visited by a middle aged woman knocking on doors for a candidate in a local election for the school board. I asked if she had concerns about her safety. She said the volunteers were trained to always tell other volunteers what street they were on, have their cars visible , wear a county election volunteer t shirt, and only go to registered Democrats with recent voting history. I’d rather the volunteers be safe and work to GOTV.

PS Thanks Chelseagirl for volunteering!

You're welcome! We canvass with a group (it's more fun that way) and always in pairs or trios. There's a group text string for questions, issues, and to notify the canvassing organizer when you're finished. We skip anyplace that looks sketchy and mark it on the MiniVAN cell phone app that keeps track of our progress. Your partner has the same list loaded and you can see each other's results and general location. Not foolproof, but you're not just out stomping around in the weeds.

I always encourage people to try canvassing--it's fascinating and you'll learn a ton about your own city.
