Americans (on the political right): "We need to secure our northern border, to keep the undesirable immigrants and terrorists out."
Canadians: "We need to secure our southern border, to keep out Americans trying to flee the United States if Trump is reelected and democracy is systematically dismantled there."
On balance, the Canadians seem to have a more viable point.

Liberating the R Mercer's of the world from the mistreatment of the Canadian Government under which they happen to live in the near future will ring some distant historical bells...
Sure, we'll bomb them first, but we already took all of it we want. And with global warming, not only we not want any more Mexico, but Canada is going to look better and better.
Don't forget, Canada has established precedent that it will allow secession. With a little carrot and sticking, someplace like Alberta becomes part of the US, and then things start to go sideways. I often joke about Panzers north, but I suspect a degree of Anschluss is more likely.
If some on the Right get their way, there will be a long-term occupation zone in northern Mexico (to provide a "buffer zone" for the border.. to stop those drug dealers and illegals.
They may not initially intend that, but that is what will happen.
And it will be a major mess.
And if you think I am kidding/joking about that, I am not.
I know you aren't joking, but I do wonder if Trump would actually have the stones to try it. I don't credit him with much, but I do see an animal cunning in him that might realize that actually putting boots on the ground in Mexico has a whole lot of downside potential for him.
He didn't even have the fortitude to pull us out of Afghanistan on his watch, and that would have been something he could easily have trumpeted, even if it had gone just like it did for Biden. He also didn't go to war with Iran.
That's not to say he'd do something remotely smart on the southern border, but maybe not something as colossally dumb as an occupation zone.
If he gets enough pressure from the media and the cult he will. While he has a certain animal cunning and probably would be reluctant, the GoP emphasis on this entire issue (and its purportedly existential nature) is going to drive in that direction, I think.
Doing ANYTHING down there that stirs things up (like raids or hit and run attacks, etc) is going to lead to a trend that way. The question is more about how much pressure builds for "action"
Stupid and arrogant gets you to some bad places.
They are all stupid enough to tiptoe their way into that exrement extravaganza.
You are certainly more pessimistic than even I am. But, then again, I have been shocked a number of times by what he has done. I really didn't seriously expect the coup attempt right up until before it happened.

My wife is Canadian, so I get a free pass ;)

They will go after Mexico first, because... brown people. So I have time ;)

He's all talk. Actually doing something is hard.

So...
After he got elected, I said several times that he would not admit defeat if he lost--and the signs of that just got clearer as time moved on.
All the signs were there, but people were blinded/fooled by past practice/norms/expectations.
I prefer pessimism, I get far more pleasant surprises that way and am prepared for the bad ones.
I knew he would not admit defeat if he lost. I just didn't think he would try to overthrow the government.
I, too, would marry a Canadian if I could. Problem with that plan is I'm already married!
Many will be marrying CanadiansЁЯШЙ! ItтАЩs sickening to think of Trump as president again. And scary that so many want it to happen.
